Chapter 10 Echokit smacked the moss with her tail and watched it go back and forth and back and forth. Flamesight’s kits weren’t old enough to play yet, they had just been born, and since Windpaw and Icepaw were apprentices now, she was a very very bored kit. How come they got to be apprentices when she had no friends! How unfair! She could be an apprentice but no, she'd have to wait another 3 moons. “Echokit!” Windpaw’s voice said. “What?” Echokit grumbled. “Come look at my first catch!” Windpaw called. “Mine’s better than yours is!” Icepaw said back. “Nuh-uh! Squirrels taste better than birds!” “It doesn't really matter as long as they taste good. And I caught mine first try. You failed that thrush. And besides, birds are harder to get and are therefore more impressive!” “I’m coming, I’m coming!” Echokit said. She looked at the catches. Icepaw had a large sparrow, Windpaw had a squirrel. “Gotta agree with Icepaw,” Echokit said finally. “Birds are harder to get, according to most warriors. Squirrels are also too fluffy. I mean, birds are also weird, but whatever.” Icepaw grinned and stuck her tongue out at Windpaw. “Okay, fine, sassy paws,” Windpaw said. Echokit sighed. “At least you still get to catch something. I’m stuck here in the nursery as a kit.” “You’ll be an apprentice soon enough!” Icepaw said, with sympathy in her eyes. “And maybe your first catch will be a squirrel bigger than Windpaw’s! Maybe you’ll get Mintspring as your mentor. I’m actually glad that she didn’t ask to be my mentor, because then I wouldn’t be able to choose between her and Redclay. They’re both really nice, really loyal warriors.” “Great ShineClan Icepaw! I won’t be an apprentice for three moons!” “They will pass by pretty quickly, I’m guessing,” Windpaw added. “But no, you can’t get a better catch than mine!” “You’re guessing,” Echokit pointed out to Windpaw. “You certainly act like an apprentice,” Icepaw said. “Well, that’s because my siblings that I grew up with are apprentices, therefore I act the same,” Echokit meowed. “Also, Skykit, Frostkit, and Spanglekit will get older and will play with you. They’ll look up to you too!” Windpaw continued. “Well, I guess that’s true,” Echokit said. “Besides, you can still play with us,” Windpaw said. “Ohhhh, I really want to show you my new move!” Icepaw said excitedly. “It’s awesome!” Windpaw’s tail twitched. “It’s not. I won’t say that my move is any better, but it doesn’t even work on enemies bigger than you!” “It does!” Icepaw hissed. “I just haven’t shown you that variation yet.” “Show me,” Echokit dared her. Icepaw crouched, her eyes aiming at Echokit’s back. A heartbeat before Icepaw struck, Echokit reared up. But instead of barreling into her like Echokit expected, Icepaw skidded to a halt and kicked Echokit’s hind legs out from under her. Then as Echokit fell, Icepaw jumped on top of her. “Okay, wow, that was good,” Echokit said, impressed. Windpaw rolled his eyes. “See? A bigger enemy wouldn’t be knocked over by just your hind leg.” “Maybe it won’t, but I’ll prove that the variation works on bigger enemies,” Icepaw said certainly. “Hey, Blackpaw and Aspenpaw!! Can one of you help me prove to Windpaw that my move works on bigger enemies?” “I will,” Aspenpaw said. “All right,” Icepaw said. She started with the same crouch that she used on Echokit, her eyes aimed for Aspenpaw’s back. Then when they reared up, she dove at their hind legs and bolted away from them before they could fall on her. “See, Windpaw?” Icepaw said triumphantly. “The variation works on bigger enemies.” “Finnnneeee,” Windpaw groaned. “What about your move?” Echokit asked her brother. “Here, I’ll show you.” He looked at Echokit’s shoulders, and she guessed that he would copy Icepaw and attack something else. He leapt over her, she ducked, and he battered her shoulders with his hind legs. Reverse psychology? Echokit thought. I guess he does like thinking everything through. Windpaw turned to her and aimed his eyes at her tail. Echokit didn’t know what to think, that he would aim somewhere else or stay true to the place he looked like he was aimed at. Echokit kicked out her hind legs and ducked, but then Windpaw jumped on top of her and held his grip, without using his claws, then jumped off and turned back to her with a quelling look. “How do you like it?” he asked. “That… was… cool… ish…” Echokit panted. Windpaw gave her a disapproving look. “I’m… just… tired,” she explained. He grinned. “I guess our moves worked!” he said. “Just wait… till I’m… an apprentice,” Echokit meowed. “I think I will,” Icepaw said, and winked.
