Echokit bounded along behind Songcloud and her siblings, trying to look excited and like she totally didn’t know that her mother and medicine cat were going to dump her in a stream to see if she was actually half-clan. “Echokit, get your head out of ShineClan and focus!” Songcloud’s voice jolted Echokit back to reality. She stared at the stream like it was her doom (which, considering she was only 2 moons old, it probably was). She snapped herself out of it, remembering she wasn’t supposed to know that. “You kits go play, Irismoon and I are having a chat.” “Okay Songcloud!” the kits chirped. Icekit turned to Echokit and Windkit. “We need to come up with a plan,” she said sternly. “Why?” Windkit whined. “In case Echokit starts to drown you dope!” Icekit said, smacking him with her paw. “Okay, okay. Geez,” Windkit responded, licking his chest. “Um… who said anything about me drowning?” Echokit had a feeling that this conversation was not going where she wanted it to. “In case you do, or get swept down the stream or something,” Icekit suggested. “I am not enjoying this conversation,” Echokit meowed. “Wait, isn’t this the FernClan border?” Icekit asked. “Well, yes,” Irismoon said, looking slightly confused. “But you and Windkit are almost apprentices, and Echokit has been here before.” “A trait that’s always useful is being able to swim,” Songcloud started. “Even if you won’t need it much, it’s nice to have in case you ever have to cross a river.” “That’s nice, Songcloud,” Icekit said cheerfully through lightly clenched teeth. “So, I’ll head off to find some herbs,” Irismoon said, turning. "It's redleaf - the herbs will be dying." “Can I come with you?” Echokit pleaded. Songcloud exchanged a glance with Irismoon, then turned to Echokit. “Sure,” she said finally. “Basic knowledge is good to have in case you ever get isolated and can’t get a medicine cat.” “That’s good,” Echokit said hurriedly, running to catch up with Irismoon. The two cats walked through the forest, and Irismoon asked Echokit to help her gather herbs. “If you find any plants or flowers that look like they have a use, cut the stem with your teeth, but don’t eat the plant in case it’s poisonous.” “Okay,” Echokit agreed. “And don’t go far!” Irismoon called after her. Echokit found a flower soon, a blue, star-shaped flower facing somewhat downwards. She gently clipped the flower’s stem with her teeth and brought it back to Irismoon. “Oh, that’s a good find,” Irismoon praised her. “That’s borage. It helps queens produce milk, which will be helpful soon.” Slightly farther down the path, Echokit found a rosemary-looking plant. She clipped it and started carrying it back when she noticed some berries. Echokit placed the plant gently on the ground and climbed a little bit up the tree, clipped a thin branch, and climbed back down. She then picked up the other plant and returned to Irismoon. “Oh,” Irismoon gasped, staring at the berries. “Don’t bring those back. Don’t eat them.” “Why?” Echokit asked. “Those are very poisonous berries,” Irismoon said sternly. “The proper term for it is yew, but we mainly know it as killfruit.” “What about the stalk?” Echokit asked, nudging it. “That’s thyme,” Irismoon told her. “It calms cats down. We can use that. We should probably go back before you find something else.” Echokit reluctantly followed Irismoon back to the stream. “She found borage and thyme, both of which Flamesight can use,” Irismoon informed Songcloud. She didn’t mention the killfruit. “That’s great!” Songcloud beamed. “I’ll head back to camp,” Irismoon said with a last glance at the kits. Then the tip of her cream tail disappeared into the bushes. “I’m sorry about this, Echokit,” Songcloud said, snatching Echokit up. “No!” Echokit squealed as she was dropped in the stream. Echokit fought the current, which, for her, was extremely difficult to swim in. The wind picked up, and the current grew harsher. “Help!” Echokit squealed. Songcloud reached down to grab her, but the wind had a sudden burst, and Echokit was swept backward. She felt herself getting weaker. The last thing Echokit saw was Icekit shrugging off whatever Windkit said, and jumping in. Her last thought was what would happen to the prophecy before it all went black.
