Description

Thom Blenkins was weeding his lawn. After a long, dry summer of drought, his resilient lawn still stood green where his neighbours had miserably failed. His flowers and potted plants still stood tall, and though he often drew odd looks from catering his garden in his own special way, it had all paid off. Despite being the talk of the small town, however, Thom Blenkins was not so much proud of his garden as he was of the way people reacted when they saw it. To him, his garden seemed simple and was not much of an achievement. Then again, he did have an unfair advantage. For years, Thom Blenkins had tricked the town, silently masterminding every predictable move of the townsfolk. The first law he had peeled off the book of Magical Deceit declared that those who are predictable are never powerful. Predictable schedules, easy to follow patterns, these only made it easier for Thom to control them. That was why he always appeared eccentric to the townsfolk. You could never be sure who else was a Caster in this world. The book of Magical Deceit was proof of the non-existence of solid proof. The book was sold by the thousand to wizards, warlocks, shamans, casters, adepts, and Physibenders all across Fendle-Glen and way beyond, even into the fabled Raketmold, and some said beyond that even still. The kit-ragged world of Wantig was gigantic, and its rulers, twin Ministers Yylo-Vay and Sk’ult-Wenk Mortine often had their hands full. The townsfolk of The Undent-Quagwarth lived far away from the higher Planes of Wantig, and for the most part distrusted magic in all its forms. Thom suspected this stemmed from their lack of Magical ability rather than their claims that “life without magic was safer”, but hed learned never to say that to their faces. Thom had easily gained control of the town with a little sprinkling of Cast here and there. The townsfolk could always be trusted to do the same thing, over and over. He felt that someone needed to take over, to benefit the town, and Undent-Quagwarth’s Mayor was, like the rest of the townsfolk, very dull and unlikely to take action. So Thom lined his first Cast. the rest of the town soon followed under his spell. But really, he thought, it wasn’t doing them any harm. They went back to their ordinary lives everyday and he rose up. So did the town, lifting higher on the Planes as it grew. Thom made sure the town didn’t notice, but it took a lot of Cast. it wasn’t everyday that your townworld lifted itself up a notch and cut itself a place above the rest. Actually it was, ever since Thom began. But no-one noticed all the same. Thom glanced at his garden. It was built out of Pure Cast, an energy that was rare to the point of next to infinite nothing. Cast in its Purest form could do a great many things, and Thom had planned a great many things to use it in. While the townsfolk saw only grass, he saw the hidden Energy. And the Cast had given him more than power. It shaped itself as a map. Thom the Caster smiled as he prepared his latest cast, a little something he called, “Wantig’s doom”. Thom stepped into the void of infinite Light and became the First Dark.
