As one of the first Egyptian deities to have existed, he is oftentimes described to be a giant, malevolent serpent deity. Ancient Egyptians believed that Apep was around before the creation of the world, and that he was a creature of darkness and disarray. The sun god Ra would fight Apep nightly to ensure that cosmic balance would remain, to which the Lord of Chaos would fall only to rise again.
