More people disappeared over the course of a week. Naomi went down to check the treehouse village and now Melody, Sam, and Leo had been taken as well. But in terms of everything else, life was normal. We still hadn’t continued classes, obviously, as the missing student count had jumped to eighteen and two more staff members had disappeared. But Ax had been introduced to the other Heroes of Welsburry and they seemed to be fitting in nicely. The days between present day and my birthday slowly dwindled from seven to zero. On October thirty-first, the day itself, Naomi, Brazen, Harlow, Calli, and I were walking to dinner. Nothing remotely unusual had happened for a few days, so I knew that right about now was the perfect time for something to happen. Even though Ax was considering us friends, she still didn’t like to eat in the big cafeteria. /I’d rather eat with the spirits/, they told me a few days after we’d first been introduced. /Continue to show them someone cares./ I felt a small tug on my sleeve midway through laughing at one of Brazen’s jokes. I looked down and met the eyes of a small second-year girl. “Hey there,” I said, smiling. “What’s up?” “You’re Wolf, right?” she asked, not returning the smile. “Raza’s brother?” I nodded slowly. “Yeah, why?” “I’m his friend. Veronica. H-He told me to come to you if any odd or bad things happened.” I raised an eyebrow. “Okay? What happened?” Veronica swallowed, then looked up to meet my eyes. “Well, the thing is… Raza’s missing.” After a pause, she added, “I’m sorry. Happy birthday, though.” She scampered away like a frightened rabbit running from a wolf. Brazen put a hand on my shoulder. “Come on. Let’s eat dinner, then you can hit things. That aren’t alive, preferably.” I nodded. I didn’t - couldn’t, even - crack a smile at his joke. Raza was missing. Raza. My annoying, speedy rascal of a little brother. I went radio silent during dinner and after. All I could think about was a plan, any plan, to get him back. It wasn’t till ten o’clock when I finally managed to relax enough to sleep. By then I’d come up with some sort of plan to rescue him and all the other missing people. This was one birthday present I’d have no problem returning to the sender.
