Description

“I’m not getting out of bed today Mom.” Savanna moaned through the baby blue sheets of her bed. “Oh come on honey, I’m sure this year won’t be so bad-“ Savanna cut her Mom of. “MOM! You know that every year on my birthday, something horrible happens!” She shouted through the door as she got up to brush her long black hair. “And this is my thirteenth birthday! It will probably be the worst!” Her Mom sighed and walked away from the door. Savanna looked in the mirror. Her pale face had a swarm of freckles in it, and one of her green-blue eyes was covered with her side-swept bangs. She looked like a doll. Savanna looked away from the mirror and ran over to her dresser. She grabbed a light pink dress with a white, lace ribbon at the waist. She threw of her striped pajamas and slipped into the dress. She slid a white headband with blue flowers into her hair and walked over to the door. She put her hand on the doorknob and froze, flashbacks of her other birthdays came to mind. In fifth grade, She forgot her homework for each class. In Second grade, She peed her pants. It was horrible. This year, she was going to do it right! She smiled confidently and turned the doorknob. Before she could even think, a flash of blue knocked her over. She got up to see her 10-year-old brother running to the table to grab a piece of toast. He had a blue soccer jersey on and his red hair was never combed. He looked just like Dad. She didn’t remember him to well, considering he and Mom had gotten divorced when she was only 5. But she saw him in her brother every day. “Aaron!” Savanna shouted to her brother. He skidded to a stop and turned around. “What?” He asked. Savanna rolled her eyes, he was hopeless. She grabbed the other piece of toast and swung her purple and black backpack onto her shoulders. Aaron was still rushing around the house as she opened the door and ran to the bus stop. She sat there and waited, the sky going gray. She moaned, she knew they hadn’t had rain in a while, but Mother Nature just HAD to pick today. Like they say, if you don’t like the weather in New Jersey, just wait a minute. So she did. But instead of the sun coming around the clouds, the bright yellow bus came around the corner. She squeezed the straps of her backpack as the bus slowed to a stop and opened the familiar creaky doors. Savanna climbed the steps and walked down the isle to her seat. She sat alone. It was kind of depressing, but Savanna was used to it. As she sat down, she closed her eyes and took a deep breath. So far, this birthday was going well. But she had jinxed it. Just then, the seat began to shake. “HEY SAVANNA!” A voice taunted her. She gritted her teeth and looked over the seat. It was Jones, the school bully. She had just about had it with him about a year ago, everybody had. But he scared everybody into being quiet. “What do you want Jones?” Savanna said through gritted teeth, frustrated. Jones reached into his backpack and took out a piece of paper. “Just wanted to wish you a happy birthday!” He sneered as he threw Savanna the paper. She unfolded it and wasn’t surprised to see what it read. ”Happy birthday shrimp. Also, don’t worry, the REAL present is at your locker!” An evil smiley face followed the note. It wasn’t the first time he had done something like this, and it certainly wouldn’t be the last. Savanna groaned and crumpled the paper into a ball, then shoved it into the side of her backpack. Just then, the bus stopped at a cul-de-sac. This was confusing, as the bus usually didn’t stop here. Savanna looked out the window to see a girl running towards the bus, she had brown hair and was wearing an orange T-shirt along with denim shorts. She got onto the bus and looked for a seat. Savanna pulled up her backpack to cover my face, she didn’t want her privacy to be invaded. However, she failed to stop the new girl, and she before she new it, she no longer sat alone. The new girl swung into the seat next to Savanna. “Hi!” The girl said energetically, “I’m Valarie! But you can just call me Val!” Val sat for a while, staring at her expectantly. Savanna eventually gave in to the stare. “I’m Savanna, hi.” She said reluctantly. Val didn’t take any notice to the grumpiness in Savanna’s voice, and just kept talking. She told her about how she had moved to New Jersey from California because her Dad had gotten a job. Savanna cringed at the word dad. Val stopped. “Is there something wrong Savanna?” She asked, worried. “My Mom and Dad are divorced so I live with me Mom. Also, it’s my birthday, so I would like some-“ Savanna was cut of by Val. “OH MY GOSH IT’S YOUR BIRTHDAY!” She shouted, and began to sing the happy birthday song. Everybody on the bus stared at her. Savanna looked out the window and was relieved to see the school ahead. The bus turned into the bus parking lot of the school and opened the door of the bus. The students streamed out, but ran quickly as the rain began.
