It's going to be a sort of thing where characters are in a virtual world that was created, purely for entertainment purposes. However, a bug in the system caused the game to create it's own life. They took down the game, however people demanded it's return as the real world had turned apocalyptic and you could no longer survive. So they made it a possibility to live inside the game. There was a method where they would transport your soul inside the game, making you live forever... however your body on the outside would deteriorate. However, no one knew of the infection of a virus. The virus would infect players. The darker your 'heart' was, the more likely you were to catch it.
