We are the people. 10 % mehr Lohn. Wages up 10 %. Wir sind die Größen. We are the greatest. Wir fahren nach Lodz. We are going to Lodz. Karpow, Kasparow. Russian chess world champions. Gorki, Puschkin. Russian writers. Glasnost, Perestroika. Russian: Transparency, reconfiguration. Sputnik, Gagarin. Russian famous satellite, famous astronaut (kosmonaut). Beinfreiheit. Leg space (in cars, trains or planes). Gedankenfreiheit. Freedom of thought. Gebührenfreiheit. No fees attached. Reisefreiheit. Freedom to travel. Keine Gewalt. No violence. Keine Zeit. No time. Keine halben Sachen. Do not do things by halves. Keine Polizei. No police. “Wir sind das Volk” was very popular, because often the GDR leaders claimed to speak for the people, but had no sufficient democratic legitimation. Later the slogan turned into “Wir sind ein Volk” uttering the wish for reunification. “Glasnost” and “perestroika” were keywords of Michael Gorbatchevs systems change in Russia. Suddenly the GDR leaders, who before always requested the people to learn from the Soviet Union, stood against the wind of change. “Reisefreiheit” was a central wish, partly because people just wanted to visit their relatives, West Germany and other western countries, but they as well knew, that their system had to change, if there was no wall to keep the people in. “Keine Gewalt” meant two things. The demonstrators were afraid of violent reactions from the authorities. By claiming that they themselves wouldn’t be violent, they requested the police, army etc. to act the same way.
