Still she tested the limits of his control of her and in an atempt to die and find her family she pierced herself in the heart with a shard of glass and his control of her was broken. She woke up and Patches was dead. Just a lifeless husk but from where he lives in her mind he still always tries to taint her thoughts and make her do bad things.
