caps)) TW: TRANSPHOBIA The next day, Sebastian came to Carly in class. She noticed that they weren’t wearing the kind of clothes that they usually were. As they approached her, they looked down at the ground. "I think I'm a boy today," said Sebastian Carly didn't know what to say to him. All she could do was awkwardly respond with "Okay." Sebastian walked away, despite clearly not knowing whether he was supposed to keep talking or leave. "Okay, everybody. Today we'll talk about writing better sentences. In fact, I know a boy in this class who's been working on a story. Sebastian, come up here please." Sebastian started to stand up, but a girl next to him raised her hand. "Yes, Ava?" asked Carly. "HER name is Susan." Sebastian grimaced at the sound of his deadname. "She told me it wasn't anymore, but it still is." "Ava, you have to call him Se-" "She's still a girl." By this point, Sebastian had sat back down. He covered his face, trying to draw less attention to himself. Carly sent Ava outside. "Why do I have to send a sixth-grade girl into the hallway?" thought Carly. "I thought we stopped having to do that when they were in 2nd grade!" When Carly got home, she was exhausted. Kayla could tell that something was wrong, so she asked her what happened. "One of the kids in my class is genderfluid, and people are being mean to him." "What does that mean?" asked Kayla. Carly told her "It means your gender can change." "I thought you could only have one gender." Carly then explained transgender people to her. "You have a gender when you're born, but some people feel like it's not the right gender. There are also people who feel like they aren't a boy or a girl, and some people who only have half a gender or no gender. Some people even feel like they have more than one gender. Genderfluid people just feel like it can change." Kayla paused for a second and just said "Okay." She seemed to be fine with trans people. Suddenly, Carly realized that kids weren't naturally hateful to Sebastian, they were just taught to act that way.
