For a few minutes there was silence, and I thought he was done. “Is that all?” I asked softly. He shook his head. “No, no, I-” I smiled slightly. “You don’t have to tell me everything if you don’t want to, Chaiyn.” He nodded, but continued. “I found Maya lying on the ground, skin paler, hair darker. She opened her eyes when I nearly collapsed next to her, and that’s when I saw her newly-found /zirinlisgavex/ - sorry, heterochromia. “After that, it took two more days, but Father eventually dragged me over to that clearing, th-threw me on the ground, and banished me.” His voice faltered when he finished the sentence, but I could tell from his tone that he was finished. He probably expected me to have a lot of questions, but all I had was one. “Are you okay?” He looked down. “All of that was my fault. If I’d just-” “No.” I stood up, walked the few steps over to where he was sitting, and crouched down in front of him. “It wasn’t your fault. You said it yourself, the Elves in your town were suck up jerks. Especially your father.” He cracked a small smile at that. “It’s true. Look at me.” He hesitated, but looked up and met my eyes. With all of the blame he’d been giving himself, I’d expected to meet gray eyes, but no, they were still the same turquoise they’d been for months now. I laid a hand on his shoulder. “I’m not going to say I’m sorry you had to grow up with that - because I know it doesn’t help. I’m not going to pity you, or treat you any less than I did before. What I am going to promise is that you will /never/ have to go back to that if you don’t want to.” I forced him to keep my gaze. “I /promise/.” Chaiyn smiled. “Thanks, Wolf.” I grinned. “No problem.” I stood up and walked back over to my desk. “You want lunch? Dad’s probably got something great cooking up by now.”
