I jolted awake the next morning. Raza had just jumped on top of me, from the looks of things. He grinned down at me in the dark. “Maya and Chaiyn are coming today.” “Good morning to you as well,” I said groggily, rubbing my eyes and glancing at the clock. It read seven in the morning - not bad for my little brother. “I was assuming you were going to wake me up at three in the morning.” Raza shook his head and smirked. “At that ungodly hour? Nah.” He paused. “Now four in the morning is a possibility-” “Get off,” I said as I shoved him lightly off of my bed, laughing. Raza ran back to his room, and we both ran downstairs a few minutes later. Dad was already cooking pancakes. “Morning, boys.” “Morning, Dad,” we chorused. Raza grabbed the orange juice from the fridge, while I grabbed plates from a cabinet. Around ten minutes or so later, the four of us were downstairs, at the table, and eating breakfast. “Your friends are coming today, right?” Mom asked, sipping her coffee. Raza nodded excitedly with a mouthful of pancake. “Yes! Maya and Chaiyn are coming!” he said once he’d swallowed. I laughed. “Someone’s got priorities.” Raza nearly choked on the air. He stammered and stuttered, trying to form a response. I laughed again and ruffled his hair. “Kidding. Yeah, Chaiyn and Maya are teleporting here around nine today.” “Now /you’ve/ got priorities!” Raza exclaimed. “I do /not/, there’s two of them! One of them’s got to go first!” “So why did you say /I/ had priorities?” “Boys!” Mom said forcefully, and we had the sense to shut up. To say Raza waited patiently would be a flat-out lie. I caught him twice staring intently at the door before the Darkedge siblings showed up. At around nine in the morning, Raza and I were playing chess in the living room. Raza had very much not intentionally chosen the spot facing the door. I had just moved my knight and declared, “Checkmate.” I heard a familiar and yet not laugh coming from outside the door, and Raza and I looked up from our game. Maya had managed to teleport inside of the door, and we could hear Chaiyn dying of laughter outside. No real harm was done, just a bit of harm to Maya’s pride. She teleported quickly inside of the house. Chaiyn used the door like a normal person, still grinning. Maya’s face was somewhere in between a tomato and a nuclear explosion of embarrassment. I won chess. Raza and I put the game away, then returned to the living room. Chaiyn was leaning against a doorframe, while Maya sat on the couch, her legs just barely touching the ground. Mom was also sitting on the couch. She looked up at Chaiyn. “So, you two are the Darkedges?” Chaiyn nodded. “Chaiyn Darkedge. Vif- I mean, pleasure to meet you.” Mom nodded. “My name’s Lenna, and my husband is in there, washing dishes.” “Ezekiel,” Dad called from the kitchen. Chaiyn nodded again. “Did you, by any chance, have pancakes for breakfast?” I could hear Dad’s smile even though I couldn’t see him. “Yes, we did. You’re an observant one.” “I’m a Sight-Seer, yes, but I could smell them regardless. Would you happen to have any left?” Dad was clearly still smiling. “Would you like some?” Chaiyn exchanged a glance with his sister. “Yes, please,” they said in unison. A minute or so later, Raza, Maya, Chaiyn, and I were sitting at our table, Chaiyn and Maya both with a plateful of pancakes. “Did you guys eat breakfast?” Raza asked. Maya shook her head, mouth stuffed full with pancake. “No, Father was coming home from his trip and Maya and I had to leave,” Chaiyn said. He ate his pancakes tentatively, like he wasn’t sure if they were poisoned, even though he was clearly starving. Maya swallowed. “These are great, Mr. Raza’s Dad,” Chaiyn and I both snickered at that title, “But they’d be better if they were waffles.” “You are never going to stop complaining about that, are you?” Chaiyn asked in amusement, taking a sip from his orange juice. “Nope!” Maya said cheerfully, cutting another huge chunk off of her stack of pancakes. “What’s wrong with pancakes?” I asked. “Waffles are better,” Maya said adamantly. “She likes the design,” Chaiyn clarified. “So /I/ can’t have secrets, but /you/ can?” Maya demanded. “Hey, I’ll share my secrets when you ask nicely.” “I have!” “Sorry, ask nicely and /don’t pester me every five seconds/,” Chaiyn corrected himself, putting a forkful of pancake in his mouth. Maya stuck her tongue out at her brother. The Darkedge siblings finished their brunch, and followed us upstairs. Maya went into Raza’s room, while I invited Chaiyn into mine. (continued next project)
