"D-dad!" I pulled away from Jack, standing up and ignoring the electrifying pain in my rib. "What the heck are you doing, Julie?! I leave you alone for 2 months, and you go skydiving with this.. boy!" He looked furious. "Dad, this isn't just some boy. He's my boyfriend." I put an arm around his lower back and he put his arm around my shoulder. "Hi, sir. My name's Jack. It's a pleasure to meet you." He extended his other arm towards Kyle. Kyle made a noise of distaste, but shook Jack's hand. "Break her heart, and I'll break you." Jack's face was swept with fear, but just as quickly as his fear came, it went. It was replaced with pride. "Yes, sir. I'll treat her the way she should be treated." Kyle's face looked as if it were made of stone. "Hmph." I let out a small yelp and grabbed my rib, wincing at the pain. Kyle came running towards you. "What happened to you?" He whirled on Jack. "What'd you do to my baby girl?!" Jack's eyes were full of concern, but he looked at Kyle. "Sir, she hurt her rib when we crash-landed." Kyle's eyes softened. "Oh. My bad." He grabbed me by my waist and pulled me up. "We should get you to a hospital. Have them check you up." I nodded, not really minding the fact that Jack's hand was on my lower back. I let them lead me through the disgusted crowd, and stuck my tongue out at them mentally. I figured I wouldn't want to use my energy on stupid things like people who don't care about anyone else but themselves. Kyle and Jack drag me as far as they can go, and Jack ends up giving me a piggyback ride. When we arrive, the nurse gets me hooked up to a machine and takes an X-ray of my rib. She comes back with the news that I had a sprained rib, and I had to wear a cast for 3 months. I laid my head on the pillow and sighed, taking in the horrible smell of hospital objects. Jack was beside me and he held my hand. "I should've said no to the skydiving thing, babe. I'm sorry." I shook my head. "It was fun; I didn't think it would end like this, though." Jack laughed weakly, but looked at me seriously. "Babe... We've been dating for 3 years now, and I don't think we're breaking up anytime soon." He reached into his pocket, and I gasped. In his hand, there was a dark blue box. He was down on one knee and I looked at the box and up at Kyle. He was beaming. "Julie, I know you can be... difficult sometimes, but that won't stop me from loving you. You are my life and you've stolen my heart and made it yours. There's no possible way of leaving you unless I'm going mentally insane. So, would you make me the luckiest man alive and marry me?" Tears of joy sprang to my eyes and I nodded. "Yes!!!" He smiled and slid the ring onto my ring finger. I squealed happily and inspected the ring. The outline was silver and the diamond in the middle was blue with a dash of purple here and there. My dream ring. The one I told him I wanted on our first anniversary. He kissed me gently and I hugged him. "Thank you," I whispered. My life was perfect. I was engaged. My rib was going to be better within 3 months. My father was happy to see me safe and sound. He gave Jack his blessing to marry me! But, little did I know, that a document would change my entire life.
