"Good morning!" Kayla was jumping on Carly's bed. She had always said it was the "funnest" to wake her up. Carly got out of bed and talked to her daughter. Today was Kayla's first day of school. "Are you excited?" asked Carly. "Super excited!" replied Kayla. "Will you be nice to the kids at school?" "Yeah!" "Do you think you'll make friends in Ms. Anderson's class?" "Yeah!" They ate breakfast and got ready for the day. They drove to the school and went to Kayla's classroom. When Kayla got settled, Carly left the school and went to the school she taught at. Carly taught 6th grade English. When she got there, she introduced herself to the students. "Okay boys and girls." One student looked confused. "My name is Ms. Kelley. You can introduce yourselves to me." Everyone in the class said their name. When she got to the boy who looked at her earlier, he shyly said "My name is Sebastian." A few hours later, class was over. Everyone left except for Sebastian. "Earlier, you said boys and girls." he said, looking at the ground. "Yeah, is something wrong?" replied Carly. "I don't feel like either of them. I feel nonbinary today." "Oh. Wait, today?" "What is it?" "You said you're nonbinary today," said Carly. Sebastian replied with "Oh yeah. I'm genderfluid. I want you to say they/them for me today. Just call me they/them unless I say otherwise." "Oh," replied Carly. "I'm sorry." "It's okay," replied Sebastian. Sebastian left the room, leaving Carly wondering about them.
