Tropical Hawaii was making waves as it entered America as the 50th state, Andy Warhol's famous "Ice Cream Dessert" painting charmed sweet-toothed art-lovers around the world, and a fresh faced young entrepreneur named Tom Renwald started an ice cream vending company in a tiny corner of Northwest Indiana with just a few bicycles and a couple dozen ice cream bars. Soon, Renwald's small business expanded across the Midwest with locations across Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. The bicycle carts grew into a larger fleet of ice cream trucks, and the transformation of the modern ice cream truck continued as the sleek, stylish yellow and white vans hit the streets of major metropolitan markets. Today, the independently owned companies maintain a line of over 250 trucks in the Midwest and South, delivering over 10 million frozen treats each year.
