Even once he got into school he was constantly told by his single mother that if he didn't do perfect in school he would be brutally punished. (Note: She never physically punished him, she just yelled at him and prevented him from going out with the few friends he had and basically emotionally tortured him) She criticized him every day for the way he styled his hair, what he wore, even how he talked. Eventually, he just got used to the years of being brutally criticized and grew numb to others opinions. Around the age of 15, he started going out more often without telling his mother, making excuses like "I'm going to the library" or "I'm getting groceries". Compulsively lying to people became the norm. When he finally became 18, he moved to America, which was as far away from the toxic home he had in Britan. Although those tendencies never quite disappeared. Adrian remained secretive and still kept his emotions bottled up until one day he just blows up, only to repeat the whole process.
