“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day” and the darkness “night.” And evening passed and morning came, marking the first day.” ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭1:1-5‬ ‭NLT I will pose a few questions… What light was God referring to when He said “let there be light”? The spirit of God was hovering above these mysterious waters. God was hovering above something- before He created anything. What are these waters? So… what light was God referring to when He called the light “light”? The sun has not been created yet. The stars have not been created yet. Actually, this verse is metaphorical. Before God makes light, He says that he was hovering over water, and this water represents chaos in the Hebrew language, which btw answers the 2nd question. When God was hovering over this water/chaos, He was actually creating the universe. He has not made complete order over His creation. When He says “let there be light!” He creates order; He turns the chaos into something beautiful. Not exactly “light”, but rather, order… separation between light and dark, day and night. Which by the way… when John describes the new earth in Revelations, it has NO water, which represents a new earth, chaos free, and without sin.
