¡Hola a todos! Here’s another piece for you, this time an entry to probably the highest-stakes contest I’ve ever entered, I worked extremely hard on this piece, just adding everything I could to make it stand a chance amongst the sea of pure beauty from the other participants. First, an artistic analysis, I did use reference for this image (https://olympics.com/en/news/figure-skating-beijing-2022-schedule-winter-olympics), but that was mostly because I knew literally nothing about figure skating but I seriously wanted to draw it the second I read that part of her backstory. More on that later. This was one of my first ever actual semi-realism attempts, I personally think it looks very good but I’ll leave that up to the host to decide. Aside from the boot, I like it. But of course, you might be wondering why I chose to wreak so much havoc on her clothing! And the answer is simple- I’m not drawing her skating in a suit-thing when I could design her an outfit myself! Since Scratch ruined the quality, click on the background to see zoomed-in parts of different areas of the drawing, and if you keep on clicking it’ll eventually show a quick sketch of the dress design, which I will explain now. I tried to take elements of her original designs to create her own stylized figure skating outfit, including the two different shades of gray (which could also represent the melancholy) the heart design on her tie (which is on the front of the dress, but you can’t really see it in the actual piece), the length of her skirt (the two designs provided both had a very short skirt), and of course the roses. I really wanted to add some red motifs to the dress but it just looked weird whenever I did it, so I replaced it with just one red rose on the collar thing. I wanted her dress to be very simple, she doesn’t seem like a very extravagant person and I doubt she’d be able to even get a very fancy outfit in the city she lives in, but also unique to her. Not sure how well I accomplished that. The designs on the sleeves/tights were particularly annoying to draw (mostly just the sleeves lol), and I really have no consistent design for the vines. They’re snaking around her arms. That’s it. And the glove didn’t have much thought put into it besides having the same little triangle thingies as the collar. There’s also a big rose design on her back, but again I couldn’t show very much of that in this piece. Now, the… everything else analysis. Obviously this pose is very different from the original. I chose it because it displays what would perhaps be a moment of reflection in her life, she’s broken away for a moment from the intensity and cruel reality of the world to descend back into the times where things were simpler, but she can never truly forget, even for a second, what the world has proved itself to be like. Probably taking some liberty there, but I don’t care. My only regret was that her expression was different than the original, but it fits better with her character description anyway. I tried to make the rink look dirty and unused, again because of the city in which she lives. If it’s as torn up by crime as described then I highly doubt something as fickle as a skating rink would be well taken care of, and I wanted her background to look like it could fit into the world of the original. And to go off more on the pose, not only does it display some form of nostalgic and bittersweet recollection, but also reflects on the feeling of her world overall. Sad, with lessening hope, but still just barely able to remember better times- or at least times in which they were ignorant- with a hint of sorrow. Instead of holding out a letter, she’s simply extending her hand in a slightly downward motion, perhaps hoping someone will take it and tell her everything will be okay, and that the second she steps off the ice she doesn’t have to go back to the life she’s chosen to lead. I’m fully aware that technically the pose could disqualify my piece. That’s fine. If it does I’d appreciate being told if possible, because the deadline is getting closer and I’m about to go on vacation, so I’d need a head start to finish a second entry in time because I’m too timid to ask for an extension. If not though it’s fine, I’m just happy I managed to draw this at all. Also, I know you said she has earrings, but I didn’t include any in this. And one last thing- generally speaking, figure skaters are disallowed to wear their hair down. Anything dangling that could theoretically mess up their performance is highly frowned upon by judges, but in some cases skaters can still do so if they’re careful, but they’re not likely to get a high score if they do so. I chose to draw her with her hair down while skating as a visual representation of her rebellion against the norm, first against her neglectful parents (sort of) and then against the various questionable social groups of her home. It shows that she’s not afraid to step outside of boundaries to-
(Click to zoom, click the background to see zoomed-in versions and the outfit sketch, fullscreen for better quality) -do what’s needed, and that anyone who gives her crap about it can go step on a Lego (sorry description got too long). But that’s all. The song has no real relation to the piece, I just instantly thought of it when I saw the title, and I did find a clean version so that’s good. It does say h-e-double hockey sticks though, if that’s too inappropriate then I can change it All art by me.
