You have a higher chance of getting in the more well known you are, but you still have a really good chance of getting in (As long as you put effort in) as I'll try to fit as many Scratchers as I can. When I say "Gimmick" I mean things that make your character unique. Examples include: Link's shield, Steve's inventory, Etc.
