We’d been a nomadic season. A no-man’s land. Living in this empty space alone. Waiting, wandering, and worrying that this very well be the end. Then, a faint glow appeared on the distant horizon, accompanied by a human silhouette. At first we were afraid, but our hearts whispered that the ‘someone’ in the distance was safe. In our exhaustion we tried to cry out or even whisper, but no sound came. You see, we’d been in this wilderness for quite some time and were week. We had lost so much. Yet as the last grain of sand fell through the hourglass, that distant glimmer grew into a bold, bright display of splintering light, throwing long shadows in our direction. Hands over our eyes, peeking through the gaps in our fingers we saw the unknown figure getting closer, now in a dead sprint, racing toward us. We then sensed an adrenaline shot of hope. The fears, judgements, and preconceived notions that brought us to isolation began to be replaced by a burst of possibility. Maybe this place of emptiness could be filled. This parched desert could flourish. Compassion, empathy and hope began to surge through us and gave our legs a newfound strength. Half running, half stumbling, we strove towards our unfamiliar friend - and finally, we leaped into a deep embrace that offered newfound courage. Pulling back we saw those kind eyes. And now the question our soul had asked a thousand times was uttered: “WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR?” Written by Joel and Luke Smallbone of ‘FOR KING + COUNTRY’
