The clearing fell silent. Chaiyn was the first to react. “Okay, Jessica, I’ve been saving this for someone else, but if you refuse to let me go, you’ll get it instead.” She completely ignored his threat and instead looked at him, confused. “How did you know my name?” “You said it yourself. I’m a Seer. Anyway, Splasher, would you kindly let me go?” I stifled a laugh from the term Chaiyn used for Jessica. /Splasher/ did not sound threatening at all. “The thing is, Seer, if I let you go-” Jessica started. She never got a chance to finish her sentence, because Chaiyn followed through with his threat and elbowed Jessica in the ribs. She stumbled backwards, losing her concentration and the shadows trapping Chaiyn flickered out. Chaiyn drew a dagger from his belt that I never knew he’d had and held it at Jessica’s throat. “Leave us alone, or I’ll use this.” She gulped, trying to not show the fear on her face. “You won’t be able to destroy what they’ve built here,” she said quietly, then faded into the shadows. Chaiyn sheathed his dagger and turned around. “Alright, where were we?” “Where did she go?” Brazen asked, clearly unconvinced that she was gone. “She shadow traveled away, if she knows what’s good for her.” Brazen nodded uncertainly. Naomi jumped down from her tree branch and Shadow climbed down. “That was eventful,” Naomi said. Chaiyn shrugged. “I’ve seen worse. Anyway, do we want to try to stop the monsters now?” Harlow nodded. “Sure.” Elena was still messing with shadows by a bookshelf. “We should do it now. You guys probably don’t have much time until you have to get back.” Harlow joined Elena in summoning the shadows away from each other, and Chaiyn followed suit a moment later. I attempted my part, to draw the monsters together. It worked faster than I expected. Every single monster out there seemed to have a consciousness here, and that was hundreds of thousands of monsters to destroy. I did what I’d done to banish my own monster, throw positive thoughts at the mob of hell within the shadows. Throughout the first few minutes, it didn’t seem like it was doing much, but after around five minutes, the monsters’ consciousness started to shrink. Eventually, the monsters seemed to be small enough to fit in your pocket. I hadn’t noticed, but as the three Shades and I had been working on taking the monsters away, the shadow part had been getting lighter. Harlow was the one to banish the shadows for good. Elena looked as if she could do this again any day for a long time, but Chaiyn looked quite worn out. I wasn’t sure if it was a coincidence or not, but he was transparent again. “That was… hard,” Harlow said simply. Elena shrugged, but Chaiyn nodded in agreement. It wasn’t hard for me, it was just intense. Shadow, Brazen, and Naomi looked around. I realized that the former shadow part looked exactly like any other part of the woods, and that the three of them could see now. The dinner bell rang a second later. “See you,” I said to the Darkedge siblings as the five of us ran back to the school, leaving the monsters behind for good.
