my name is theseus. when i was born, my father considered me his legacy. but at the same time, he did not trust the gods. he did not trust the oracle when she spoke the queer and mystifying words of her prophecy. he did not trust poseidon when his curse and possesion befell the fair maiden, aethra. he did not trust zeus with his legacy. but fate had a way of choosing its own path, and thus, i was born. and i was called theseus. my name is theseus. my destiny was always preordained. but, the cruel hands of fate decided now that i overturned that preordained rock of fate it was my birthright. my name is theseus. i fought many bandits in my life, but none of them mattered. those who harm you and bring you misery will never be remembered. if one was to consider disasters the only interesting part of their lives, then perhaps they have nothing to lose. i, however, think differently. my name is theseus. athens was a place of mystery. it was my father's home. i was not born, nor raised, in such a place. yet it seemed familiar in a mysterious way. and in that moment, as these people, these people of a city i had never inhered, they expected something from me that i was unsure if i could deliver. it was in fate's hands. and fate thought about it. and fate decided, that for now, i could remain, theseus. my name is theseus. the world was never really cruel to me, but it was never quite fair. those who i considered good and just became those who i despised most of all. yet still, i continued to do what i could do for them. as my fathers before me would profess. my name is theseus. as i set sail into the aegean sea, i said a promise to my father, a promise that i believed. a promise of sails of white instead of black, a promise that i planned to keep. but my journey brought nothing but a devastating loss worse than the journeys of a thousand seas. and i wondered what to believe. yet, i am no more, i am no better, than the average human being. and as i sailed back into the aegean sea my guilt and selfish regret overshadowed everything i had, everything i knew. and the sails that spoke the truth of life were black instead of white and that day, the world died. and i wondered if it was all for nothing. my name is theseus. i fought death many times. but unlike fighting human beings, death is very different. much like life. the conflict of a person's mind when they are aware they are going to die, and yet survive, is neither comprehendable or able to be explained. i faced this conflict many times. my name is theseus. my death was nothing to be remembered. some consider me a fool. a fool for daring to do things that a few people disliked. a fool for trying to be someone i was not. perhaps i did. perhaps i tried too hard to impress others. and in the end, it still turned out the same. my name is theseus. but i suppose you've heard that before. many other heroes have told their stories, and mine is no different. but you let me tell you a final story. mine. and as i look into the menacing eyes of death himself, as some aspect of my soul falls off the precarious and toppling cliff of fate, as every part of my life returns to me in flashes of light, as i finally leave this earth... i say goodbye. i say goodbye to the people i could never impress. i say goodbye to my father's grave that was dug because of me. i say goodbye to my birthplace and to athens, two places that were never my home. i say goodbye to the skies. my name was theseus.
