I glanced at her ears, which I could just see through her hair. “You’re an elf?” She quickly covered her ears with her hair. I looked at her left hand, where her ring finger seemed to be broken. “What did you do to your hand?” She then proceeded to cover the finger with her other hand. I sighed in exasperation, then paused, realization dawning on me. “Did you have a ring like Chaiyn’s?” “Chaiyn?” she asked, a small spark of interest in her eyes. “Yeah, do you know him?” “Maybe,” she said, drawing out the word as much as possible. I sighed, standing up. “It’s bad enough he’s keeping secrets. He needs help but won’t let me or my friends help him,” I said, starting to walk down the path towards the school. “Why does he need help?” she called after me. I bit down a smirk as she’d done exactly what I hoped for. I turned around. “He’s cursed and needs to find a way home. But if you don’t know him I’m not sure why you’d be concerned.” She sighed. “He’s my brother,” she said, then muttered something unintelligible under her breath. “So you do know him.” “No, I don’t, he just happens to be related to me,” she replied snarkily, sticking her tongue out at me. I laughed. “He said he did something to his little sister and that’s why he wasn’t going to tinker again. What did he do?” She gestured to her darkened eye and pale skin. “He made me a Shade,” she whispered. “But I like it.” I frowned, confused. “But-but that’s impossible. You can't just force a power on someone.” “Well, what do you think happened? My brother’s a genius so he found a way, obviously.” “If he’s a genius then he shouldn’t be afraid to tinker again.” “He may not realize he’s a genius but he is one.” She paused, then added quietly, “He really enjoyed tinkering and should get back to doing it but he’s too scared. This might be good for him.” I nodded. “Anyway, I should get back to the school.” “I’ll probably see you tomorrow because you’re here everyday, but bye!” She turned around, took a deep breath, and opened the curtain of vines to her brother’s workshop. “Chaiyn!” I heard Chaiyn’s call of, “Maya!” as I turned around and ran back to the school.
