P R O L O G U E : Two kittens slept in a cardboard box. They were small, wet, cold, and cuddling for warmth. It was raining, and it was their third day in that box, and they were hungry. One of them was a silver kitten and the other was a charcoal color with silver spots all over. " Sis, wake up, we have to find a way out of here." tired, the charcoal kitten mumbled ," That's what you said yesterday, and we're still here. I'm starting to think we'll be here forever... I just wish those humans hadn't taken us away from our mother..." The silver kitten sat back down next to her sister, and tried to comfort her as well as herself, "I know, our mother didn't even get to name us. But, we need to get out of here. Since it started raining, I noticed that the box is getting easier to rip, so, I think we could easily get out of here if we keep ripping the box. see we're closer to freedom alread-" But the kitten was cut off by a human hand pulling her away. "NO!!!" yelled the kitten left behind "you were all I had left..." Troubled, the kitten fell asleep. The next morning, she remembered what her sister had said about the box. The kitten clawed at the box, surprised to find it come away in her paws like mud. She pushed through the box, and started calling for her sister, but nearly getting trampled by human feet, she soon gave up. She ran to a place without any of the humans, an alley. "Hello young kitten, what are you doing here, are you lost?" in front of the kitten, was a skinny but muscular black cat with many scars criss - crossing her body. "Umm... no, uhh, yes? I don't know." responded the kitten. "What is your name, maybe I can help you get back to your owners." "I don't have a name... or owners, anymore that is..." The black cat looked supprised "How can you not have a name? your mother should have named you by now?" at the mention of her mother, a wave of sadness washed over her. She looked down at her feet and didn't respond. "Oh... I'm sorry." said the cat. "My name is Tress. Why are you here?" The kitten explained. "Well, everything started out great, I had my sister and my father and mother, but our mother said that she wasn't going to name us because the humans would do that. So we didn't have names. But then, those humans took us and put us in a box outside. We were there for a long time before it started raining. I think we were there a few days. Well, then my sister was taken by another human. I don't know why they took her. And why they didn't take me too... but my sister was taken and today I went looking for her, but I was getting tired of dodging human feet, so I gave up and came to a place without humans, here." "Oh. I'm sorry to hear your sister was taken. I just don't understand humans... If you need a place to sleep, you can stay with me." Tress offered "Really? Thank you! Where do you sleep?" The kitten asked. "Over there." Tress answered, nodding her head in the direction of a garbage can that was fallen over. Inside the garbage can, was a tattered blanket and some odd smelling human food, but to the kitten, it seemed like more than enough. She settled in to the blanket and took a bite of the food, happy to be warm again. "Wow, you are hungry aren't you!" Tress exclaimed. "well, eat as much as you like, there's more where that came from!" The kitten purred with her mouth half full and settled down. "Thank you for letting me stay." the small she-cat mewled.Tress responded "It doesn't matter, I figured you've had enough bad things happen to you in a life time." The kitten didn't respond. Tress filled the silence by saying "Well, Kitten, you need a name." Tress paused for a moment, looking at the small she - cat. "How about Twinkle. the silver dots on your fur do twinkle in the light." "Twinkle." Repeated the kitten "I like that. Thank you again Tress." "No problem" replied the cat, but Twinkle was already curling up to sleep.
