We had agreed before Naomi’s and my fight that we would spend the two week long Winter Break like we’d done the previous year, so after my week in Welsburry it was back to the school. I’d done a decent job keeping my temper in check at home, but at school… I knew it was only a matter of time before I lost it again. And that was why, on the second day back, I was packing a bag of things. Food, basic survival items, etc. They weren’t as strict for attendance during Winter Break as they were the rest of the year, so I figured I could use this week to try and sort things out. I opened the door to the outside world and walked down the familiar path. My eyes lingered for a second on Shadow’s grandmother’s house. /It’s not too late to ask for help/, I thought. But I knew I’d ruin that relationship quicker than I might have ruined mine and Naomi’s. As soon as I was covered by the trees, I raised the small black crystal I’d found on my desk and teleported away. The monster took hold as my feet touched the solid ground of Ren’s cave. I couldn’t help but remember its words back from last year. /The heroes of Welsburry are no match for any villain set in their path… but what if the element of surprise isn’t on their side?/ Well, now the element of surprise wasn’t on theirs. Because now my friends were the heroes, and I was the villain.
