Instructions

Przewalski's horse, also called the takhi, Mongolian wild horse or Dzungarian horse, is a rare and endangered horse originally native to the steppes of Central Asia. It is named after the Russian geographer and explorer Nikołaj Przewalski.

Description

The Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute is heavily involved in saving Przewalski's horses, including through reproductive research, genetic management of the North American herd, global genetic management, reintroduction and capacity building. Today, there are about 1,900 Przewalski's horses living in captivity or in the wild at one of several reintroduction sites. This is a huge milestone for an endangered species heading toward extinction. The only truly wild horses in existence today are Przewalski's horse native to the steppes of central Asia. The best-known examples of feral horses are the "wild" horses of the American West. Unlike a domestic horse, a Przewalski's horse is truly wild. They have never really been domesticated. So, it is not possible to ride these animals, like other domestic species. Just because we can't ride these beautiful creatures doesn't give us a reason not to at least TRY to save them! Heart, star, comment, and remix to spread awareness!
