Instructions

That Thursday, in our fourth class, we were each assigned a potion to brew. I was assigned a sedative potion, Naomi was assigned a slowness potion, Brazen was assigned a speed potion, Harlow was assigned an invisibility potion, Calli a jumping potion, and Shadow a night vision potion. Another boy named Evan was assigned a poison potion. According to Professor Brooks, no student had yet made that potion correctly. Around halfway through class, Professor Brooks looked into the boy’s cauldron and sighed. “You add the mushrooms before the gargon powder, Evan.” Evan smiled sheepishly and quickly discarded his potion, which was starting to froth in a way that would not end well. Eventually, Evan managed to succeed in the poison potion, the first one in all the classes to do so. The rest of the students, including us, had finished too. Professor Brooks dismissed us to our next class. After school, I finished up a small bit of homework, then ran down to the woods, taking the stairs that led up the cliffside from our school to the path two at a time. As I ran down the path, I was hoping Ren would not find me first. And luckily, he didn’t. I found him outside his current residence, just closing the door behind him. He looked up. “Hello there.” I nodded, panting a little from sprinting down the path. “Hi. Yesterday we covered a little more on the healing insanity spells.” He was attentive instantly. “What’s the limit now?” “I don’t think there is one, Professor Malone just said that the longer it had been, the harder it would be. How long ago was it?” I asked. “She lost it around nine years ago.” He stared at the ground. He was referring to his aunt. I winced. “Probably doable, but definitely difficult. I’ll teach you the spell, then you could practice. With time, one of us should be able to do it.” He nodded, meeting my eyes. “You don’t have to help, Acwulf. You don’t even know who she is.” I shrugged. “Sure, I don’t have to, but I want to. You don’t have to take care of everything yourself, Ren.” He nodded once more. I taught him the spell, then went back up to the school at Brazen’s calling. The six of us met up in my room, and talked together for the few minutes we had left until dinner. Afterwards, we went into our dorms. I sat awake on my bed, not quite ready to sleep. Tomorrow was the first power club meeting of that school year. I stood and walked over to the window, looking out into the woods. I located Dusk’s platform, just barely peeking through the trees. I could just make out a few ice spikes. Their case wasn’t unusual, but hopefully soon it wouldn’t happen. I walked back over to my bed and laid down, closing my eyes.
