CHAPTER 1: Beekit stretched out and yawned. The dawn light was seeping through the nursery entrance creating a warm glow in the dark den. Firfoot wasn’t in the den, which made Beekit a bit happier, even though he knew his clanmates would have one eye on the nursery at all times. Soaked and dried pine nettles were laying in clumps across the nursery floor and Beekit made a mental note to ask Fawnpaw to clean the den. Beekit spotted a pair of green eyes shining in the back of the den. “Dovekit?” He asked softly, trying to keep his voice hushed. His sister looked up from cleaning her pelt. “Yes?” She sounded annoyed, like usual. Sometimes Beekit envied Dovekit, for her beauty and calm demeanor, but other days he felt bad for her. She’d have to lead the clan with no experience. Cats always said he acted as a leader, but that’s not the life he wanted. He’d be perfectly happy as a medicine cat, and besides, Sootleg would need an apprentice at some point. “Wanna get a mouse with me?” Dovekit nodded and daintily leaped to her paws and out of her nest. “I’ll lead the way.” He meowed, taking the lead. A cool breeze was blowing outside of the nursery and it sent a chill down Beekit’s spine. The forest of pines and firs didn’t provide much protection during leaf-bare, and the camp was open and allowed harsh breezes. Rookstorm and Plumstripe were sharing a crow, chatting. “Tanseyleg and Burnetfoot would know best,” Plumstripe admitted, his ginger tabby pelt blowing in the wind. “But are you sure they could know the future deputy?” Rookstorm nodded, gold eyes shimmering. “They guessed right last time.” The twin elders were older than Ravenstar herself, and Beekit wondered if they knew Ravenstar would be the next leader too. “Well, who’d they guess then?” Plumstripe demanded, eyes wide. “Beekit.” They had guessed wrong, then. No one was gossiping about his outburst yesterday, because no one would think he’d be leader after that. Turning away from the warriors, he grabbed a mouse and dragged it over to Dovekit. While waiting, she had settled down and dragged some soft nettles over to lay her own. She looked up at him, her gaze piercing him. “I didn’t find enough nettles for the both of us, sorry.” Beekit flicked his tail irritably, Dovekit had a sharp tongue and bad attitude behind the soft smile. “It’s fine.” He meowed through gritted teeth as he dropped the mouse at her paws. “I didn’t want to sit anyway.” Her gaze showed no curiosity, simply understanding. She sighed and took a smile bite of the mouse. “I heard what they said.” Beekit frowned. How had Dovekit overheard them? “Tanseyleg and Burnetfoot are wrong,” he meowed, shaking his head. “I won’t be the next deputy.” Dovekit cocked her head to the side, curiosity blazing in her warm eyes. “I feel as if your wrong,” She meowed softly. “You cannot control Shadowcloud’s choice of deputy.” Beekit narrowed his eyes, breathing heavily. She was right. Ravenstar and Shadowcloud would discuss with Sootleg and Firfoot about choosing the next deputy. One kit would be trained by Shadowcloud, and get an apprentice as soon as they were ready. While the other would train under Sootleg, and be taught ways of medicine. “I can tell them I don’t want it, though.” He meowed boldly. Beekit didn’t know if he could deny the training, but if he told Shadowcloud he wanted to be a medicine cat apprentice then surely his father would agree? Dovekit frowned. “Why don’t you want the role?” She asked, as though she couldn’t understand his reasoning. “I just don’t want to be leader,” He meowed with a shrug. “I don’t like the strict life.” Dovekit just shook her head and took another bite of the mouse, not speaking her disagreement and appealing to everyone.
