CHAPTER 1: “Dovekit, get back here!” A black tabby tom cried as Dovekit raced past him. Skidding to a halt, she turned around to face him. “What’s the matter, Beekit?” She asked, a sickly sweet tone to her voice. “Can’t stand to lose?” Beekit fluffed up, making him look twice his size. Beekit was a large kit already, his shoulders broad, paws big. Paws pounded on the floor, drumming to a perfect beat. “See Firfoot, they’re alright.” Dovekit puffed out her chest, her father would see how brave she was. Beekit shrank, his fur lying flat as their parents padded over to them. Firfoot looked panicked. “You could’ve died!” She wailed, leaning on Shadowcloud for support. Shadowcloud and Firfoot had been arranged mates but ended up falling in love. Dovekit wanted something like that one day, and maybe being the deputy's kit would make the chances higher. Dovekit knew the most likely option would be Fawnpaw, as he was young and handsome. Laurelberry, Fawnpaw’s mother, was close with Firfoot. When the two were both of age, their mothers would seal the deal and Dovekit would be mates with Fawnpaw. “Dovekit?” Shadowcloud leaned forward. “You here?” “She’s dozed off again,” Beekit muttered. “Yes, I’m fine.” Dovekit meowed, hot with embarrassment. Firfoot was already shooing them back into camp, her face scrunched up with lasting worry. Dovekit silently hoped they hadn’t told Ravenstar. The leader was her father’s mother, and the she-cat was quite stern. A spotted head popped through the entrance. “Oh good, you found them.” Sootleg, Shadowcloud’s littermate, backed out of the way so Dovekit could bound into camp. Crowfoot, a beautiful spotted she-cat, was sweeping nettles away with a few flicks of her tail. She looked captivated by her work and seemed to be murmuring to herself. “Dovekit!” Ravenstar’s booming voice silenced the clearing. “It’s good to see you and Beekit didn’t get lost.” The cracking of dead brambles made Dovekit aware of Shadowcloud and Beekit entering camp. Since Dovekit or Beekit would be deputy one day, everyone seemed to panic whenever they were out of eyesight. Fawnpaw’s piercing gaze brought Dovekit back to reality. He was staring at her, malice in his eyes. Dovekit shifted away from his stare, wondering what the tom-cat was thinking. “Dovekit! Beekit!” Dovekit recognized Egretblaze’s soft voice immediately. Beekit was already racing over to her, only stopping when he started to wheeze. “Hi, Egretblaze!” Dovekit called, padding over to her carefully. Dovekit was quite short and wasn’t built for running like Beekit was. She would be more useful in leading than fighting or hunting. Egretblaze’s mate, Rookstorm was sitting with their kit, Campoinear. He was made a warrior a few moons ago, although Dovekit didn’t remember much. All she knew was that SaviorClan rejoiced, happy to regain a warrior. Dovekit didn’t know what had happened to SaviorClan to dwindle its numbers, but she knew the clan was willing to take in outsiders, something they had never done before. Beekit bounced up and down, energy radiating from him. “Can we play with Campoinear and you? You two are the best at games!” Beekit was right, they were. Maybe it was because Egretblaze had been a mother herself, and Campoinear was still young. “I’m not sure,” She meowed honestly. “I think your father wanted to talk to you.” Dovekit sagged. Was Shadowcloud angry that they had left camp? Beekit was already defensive. “We were just playing hunter and prey! It’s not that big of a deal.” “But it is,” Egretblaze meowed, shaking her head. “Your Shadowcloud’s kits and one of you will be leader one day.” Beekit huffed. “Well, it won’t be me! I don't want to lead some stupid clan!” Egretblaze stiffened and she leaned towards him. “Your lucky, Beekit. You have no challenger for the role as deputy, nor does your sister. We all know what happens when one then more kit is born to a leader or deputy.” Beekit was silent. Dovekit knew what Egretblaze was talking about. “My kit’s won’t do such things!” Beekit meowed, defensive again. “I’ll raise them to know better!” Egretblaze shook her head and pulled away. Dovekit could smell Firfoot approaching, and she turned to face her mother. “Rain’s coming,” Firfoot announced. “We best get inside so we don’t get wet.” Dovekit followed her mother into the nursery, pines waving in the sudden wind. ‘Beekit needs to learn to stay quiet,’ She thought, ‘or he will get us both in trouble.’ Although, as Dovekit was drifting to sleep, she realized they could not get in trouble. So Beekit could do whatever he liked.
