Instructions

Click on small image of the bird type that you want. The code plays rates of drummings to match type (turbo mode plays rate more accurately), then plays real recording. Downy woodpeckers drum slowest, with brief rest in between, about 1 second. Hairy woodpeckers peck more rapidly, with longer rest lengths. Great spotted woodpeckers tap at about 18 taps per second. Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers start with a very fast drumming then move to a very slow drumming that is irregular.

Description

Different woodpecker species drum at different rates. For example, Hairy Woodpeckers drum with at least 25 taps per second, but has long pauses between sets of drummings. By contrast, Downy Woodpeckers drum only about 15 taps per second, and drums frequently, often with very brief pauses between each set. The great spotted woodpecker drums at a rate of 18 taps per second. Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers start with a very fast drumming then move to a very slow drumming that is irregular.
