The September 11 attacks, commonly referred to as 9/11, were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by the militant Islamist terrorist group Al-Qaeda against the United States of America on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. People on the planes and towers told their loved ones their goodbyes and farewells. Both Towers and the other 5 buildings were destroyed after the twins collapsed, taking down millions of pounds of steel, fire, concrete, etc. The attack was so deadly and huge, to the point where smoke from both of the towers could be seen from space. The World Trade Center wasn't the only target of the terrorists. The Pentagon was crashed into, and the last plane was headed for the White House, luckily people already knew what happened on the news, and the passengers fought back against the terrorists. Because of this, the plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, meaning the White House was safe. 2,979 people passed away on this day. The South Tower was 6 feet shorter, at 1,362 feet tall. They were extremely heavy too, they each weighed 250,000 tons, that is well over 1,000,000 pounds! They were completed in the early 70's. For a small period of 2 years after their completion, they were the tallest buildings in the world! They stole the Empire State Building's 40 year title as the tallest building in the world. They were surpassed by the formally Sears Tower. After the events of 9/11, all 7 buildings were replaced by a modern building complex. The One World Trade Center or Freedom Tower, is the main tower of the new WTC. The new tower didn't have a twin, it is a single tower, the tallest in the United States, and in the western hemisphere. It's in the top 10 tallest buildings on Earth. And they appeared in over 500 films. And they were modeled by an Asian person.
