“So, Wolf, ready for a new year of school?” Naomi asked as she boarded the train, sliding into the seat next to me. You heard her right. My name is, in fact, Wolf. Technically, it’s Acwulf, but I go by Wolf with most people. You may be wondering if my special name has any relevance, and it does. I’m a werewolf. I grinned. “As I’ll ever be,” I said, meeting her light brown eyes, framed by her dark hair. She returned the smile. “Good.” I looked out the window, watching Petersville fade away. Shadow was in the seat behind me for a change. Between Ren, Julia, and her grandmother, with a little help from Naomi and I, they’d scraped together enough money to send Shadow to school. I could tell she was excited, she’d been wanting to go forever. A lot of things have changed since last school year. For one, Shadow and Ren had moved back to Welsburry Village, somewhere they hadn’t been living for nine years. And another, Shadow was going to Welsburry School of Magic now. Instead of staying at home, Ren was teleporting to the woods to stay with Shadow’s grandmother in her cabin. Not sure what he wanted to get out of it, but that was his decision, not mine. A few stops later, Brazen and Harlow got on. The twins had changed a bit too, but Harlow’s were more noticeable. Instead of her curly brown hair hiding her face, it was pulled back in a ponytail. She still sat in the window seat of the train, but only because her brother wanted to sit facing the aisle. Say hello to Brazen the clown. As usual, Brazen entertained our part of the train with his jokes, riddles, and sarcastic comments. Harlow and Shadow somehow managed to hold a conversation across an aisle diagonally and over a seat. Naomi and I were chatting quietly, sometimes laughing at Brazen’s cheesy jokes. Once Woodville’s stop rolled around, Calli got on. She sat next to Shadow, and they proceeded to argue over the window seat for the next two minutes. Calli won, it seemed, because I could see her looking out the window in the reflection of my own. The view of Welsburry School of Magic as the train rolls into the station will never get old. The majestic castle that is our school practically glowed in the afternoon sunlight. All the students started filing off the train, the six of us fell into line when we could. As my feet touched the stone platform, I instantly felt different. Here was where I’d spent the good majority of the past five years. We grabbed our luggage from that car and walked down the path, heading towards the main entrance to the school. It was the last day of August, and the summer breeze rustled through the woods as we walked by. I quickly located Shadow’s grandmother’s house amidst the trees, as well as Naomi’s brother, Carlos’s treehouse village. After making our individual dorms feel like home again, the six of us went down to the woods. Shadow sprinted along the path towards the sparkling blue lake that was in front of her house. Naomi went her own way to go visit her brother, and Harlow and Brazen went over to the Wolf fruit tree grove. Meanwhile, I walked down a slowly fading path towards a friend’s treehouse. Dusk, my non-binary friend with ice magic, was sitting on the edge of their treehouse platform thing they called home. They seemed to be practicing their ice magic, judging from the amount of shattered ice spikes both on the ground and on the tree across from them. They saw me walking up and smiled. “Wolf! You’re back!” I grinned back. “Yep. School starts tomorrow.” They summoned back most of the ice to their hands. “I’ve missed the power club. That made it so easy to control the ice. It got a lot harder over the summer.” I nodded. “Makes sense. Don’t worry, it’ll start up again Friday.” “Tomorrow’s Wednesday though.” “It’s the first day of school. They want to make sure everyone’s settled in first.” They nodded, slightly disappointed. “Oh. I guess I’ll have to wait till Friday then.” I smiled. “You survived the summer. You’ll live through a few more days.” “Let’s hope so,” they muttered, causing us both to laugh. “I’m gonna head back over there,” I said, gesturing behind me. They nodded. “Alright. See you soon.” I waved, turning around and walking back to the point where this path intersected with the others. I turned down the path that led to Shadow’s grandmother’s house. As I approached the house, a voice behind me startled me so much I almost transformed into a wolf. “Hello, Acwulf.” I turned around and met Ren’s eyes. “Really?” He laughed a little. “It was worth it.” I sighed and rolled my eyes. “Hello yourself. How are you so quiet when you walk?” He shrugged. “I avoid the leaves and sticks, I guess. Mainly it’s practice. Being sneaky can come in handy.” “It’ll win you all the hide and seek games, that’s for sure,” I muttered. He smiled. “Anyway, see you in a few days?” he asked as the dinner bell rang. I hadn’t realized that much time had passed. I nodded. “Yep. See you.” (cont. below)

Description

(Story Cont.) I ran down the path as he turned to go inside the house. I met up with the twins, Shadow, Calli, and Naomi, and the six of us went back to the school together. In the dining hall, we claimed our usual table, enjoying the feast that was always there for the first night back at school. After the meal, the six of us went up the stairs to the sixth floor of dorms. Shadow’s dorm was on the other side of mine. The others went inside theirs, and I stopped Shadow before she went into hers. “Enjoying school so far?” She nodded excitedly. “Yeah. It’s a lot bigger than I expected. I can’t wait for classes tomorrow.” I laughed. “You’re the, like, only person I know who’s excited for that.” “You are too. Don’t bother lying.” I smiled. “Alright, you got me. See you in the morning.” She nodded. “Night, Wolf.” Notes/Credits: If you're reading this, you probably know I wrote The Wolf Boy. Well, here's the sequel: The Monster's Curse. This is Chapter 1.
