Shadow and I almost ran into each other trying to navigate the tightly packed students. We both stumbled, laughing. We walked down a meandering path through the people, just managing to get to a small corner in which we could actually, you know, move around. “I think I owe you something,” I said. She raised an eyebrow. “And that is?” “You saved my life. For all we know, if you hadn’t freed me from that tree, I could be in Ren’s custody right now - and he would never have banished his monster. Or worse, I could be dead. So, thanks.” She nodded. “You’re welcome. So, what do you owe me?” I smiled. “How about a dance?” She returned the smile and took my outstretched hand. “I thought you’d never ask.” Shadow and I waltzed down the dance floor, eventually spotting the twins, Naomi, and Calli. Brazen was dancing with Harlow, and Calli and Naomi were laughing over a joke one of them told. Naomi caught my eye and smiled. I returned the grin, finally feeling a sense of belonging. As the song ended, Shadow released my hand and went over to Harlow. Dusk pushed their way through the crowd to join the six of us. I looked over the shoulders and heads of many, many people and caught Ren’s eye. He smiled in our direction, looking happy for the first time. Naomi took my hand, leading me onto the dance floor as another song started up. Calli and Brazen followed suit, while Harlow, Dusk, and Shadow cheered us on. And that’s how the happiest night of my life came to a close.
