Naomi was talking with Shadow over at a table when I noticed a familiar figure standing in the shadows of the archway connecting the courtyard to the outside world. I walked over, untucking my shirt the rest of the way since there was no way it was going to stay tucked in. “Enjoying the party?” Ren asked quietly, watching his daughter laugh with Naomi. I shrugged. “Yeah, mostly.” “I see your date is attracting a few stares,” he noted, still not meeting my eyes. I followed his gaze and nodded. “Yes. She does that.” He smiled slightly. “Wish I had one of these growing up,” he murmured. I nodded. I knew he hadn’t gone to school because of the monster. “There’s probably lots of dances for grown-ups. There’s a Winterfest one at Welsburry Village. I know my parents like that one.” He shrugged. “Maybe. Still haven’t decided if I’m actually going back or not.” “Where are you going to stay if you don’t?” “Here. In the woods. I know a few people.” “Monster acquaintances or actual acquaintances?” “Eh. Both. I knew them when I was… in between the two.” “Any connection to those letters you had?” “Maybe,” he said, drawing the word out as long as possible. I tried to get him to meet my eyes, failing miserably. I could tell his eyes were darker, and it wasn’t just the shadows - the full moon was in three days. “C’mon. You can tell me. I won’t tell anyone else, I promise.” “Nope. All you need to know is that it’s a she. And she’s nice.” “O-kay. Any relation to you?” “You act like I’m going to tell you.” I laughed slightly. He smiled a little. He was still watching Shadow. “So. Have your friends successfully convinced you yet?” he asked. I shrugged. “Sort of. They’re close, though.” He nodded. “Who was it?” “Naomi.” “Makes sense.” I looked back at the crowd of kids. Dusk was laughing off to the side with a kid from the school. Harlow was weaving through the crowds, trying to find her brother, who was dancing with Calli. Naomi was talking with a boy by a table. She kept glancing around, looking for someone. Probably me, but I wasn’t the one with mind reading powers. Shadow was heading through the crowd, trying to get in a big enough space to breathe. “I'm gonna rejoin the party,” I told Ren. He nodded. “Enjoy yourself.” I nodded, and turned to go, pivoting on my heel as another thought struck me. “Thanks, by the way.” He tilted his head. “For?” “Your advice helped.” He nodded, a real smile lighting up his face. “No problem, Acwulf. See you around.” I returned his smile and went to go find Shadow.
