May 12 was Calli’s birthday. That day was also the day that the Spring Dance was announced. It would be happening on May 23, a Sunday. Professor Brooks announced that particular event during breakfast that Wednesday. He said that it would be open to everyone, and one of the only days on which outsiders, otherwise known as people who didn’t go to the school, would be allowed inside. Harlow’s face lit up at this prospect. After school that day, Harlow ran down to the woods at the first chance she got. I followed Naomi into her room silently. She knew I was there. A few moments of awkward silence, we both said in unison, “Will you go to the dance with me?” I knew for a fact my face turned red. She smiled. “Yes. Seeing as how I just asked the same thing.” I smiled back, internally sighing in relief. You have no idea how hard it is to ask these sorts of questions. A few days later, I had been walking through the woods, playing hide and seek with the others, when I ran into Dusk. They had been throwing ice spikes at a handmade target. One flew over my head as I looked around for Brazen, and I ducked just in time. Dusk laughed slightly. “Sorry, Wolf.” I smiled. “No problem. Nice control there.” “What are you doing?” Dusk asked, their blue-streaked blonde hair trying desperately to touch the ground. “Hide and seek. I’m looking for Brazen.” “Can I play?” They asked, swinging up onto the top of their tree branch. I nodded. “Probably. I’ll ask the others once I find them.” They nodded excitedly, summoning the ice spikes on the target back to their hand, melting them in the process. I took a deep breath, then turned into a wolf, something I hated doing. Dusk’s jaw hit the floor and they whistled in surprise. I padded into the underbrush, almost squishing a bumble bee. The bee flew up in protest, turning into Brazen a few feet away. I turned back into a human. “We’re outlawing power usage now.” Brazen laughed. “Fair enough. Oh, hey Dusk.” They waved back, jumping down from the tree. I found the others quickly, and proposed the idea of Dusk playing too. They all agreed, and the six of us hiding ran off, hoping to avoid Shadow’s eyes. I tried a strategy I’d gotten from Ren, hide in the shadows and pretend you’re not there. So I slipped into the shadow of a tree, and stayed very, very still. It worked. No one found me until the very end. We played a few more rounds, then Ren came to take Shadow home. Dusk headed in their direction, and the remaining five of us headed back up to the school.
