A few days after we returned from Spring Break, the five of us went down to the woods. Today was Friday, and we’d just gotten back from the power club. Dusk had left a little earlier than us; they’d improved massively at their control of ice. As we were racing along the path, Brazen literally ran into Ren. They collided, sending both people stumbling backwards. “Oops- sorry,” Brazen said sheepishly. Ren nodded. “Partially my fault, for blending in with the shadows.” “Where’s Shadow?” Harlow asked, skidding to a stop before crashing into a tree. “Home. I just left for a bit of fresh air.” Harlow nodded. She started down the path toward Shadow’s house, Naomi, Calli, and Brazen following. I stayed behind, waiting till they left. I turned to Ren. “Did Julia reply to your letters?” He nodded. “Yes. Thank you for delivering them, by the way.” “She said that she’s ready for you to come home,” I said, relaying the words I’d promised to pass on. He looked at me skeptically. “She’s ready to forgive, that easily?” I nodded. “Not everything you did is your fault, Ren. In fact, almost nothing is.” He nodded slowly. “I know. But it’s hard. You should know. Trying to change your worldview. Trying to convince yourself that something you thought was bad isn’t anymore.” “Go ahead. I’ve gotten a long speech about how werewolves aren’t bad from almost everyone now. Might as well round it off.” He shook his head. “I’m not going to try to persuade you. Just remember what I told you- hang on to who you are, deep down, and things will work out.” I nodded slowly. “I’ll try.” “There’s no point in telling someone something you don’t believe,” he muttered. I smiled slightly. “Fair enough.” There was a small pause of awkward-ish silence. “I should go,” Ren said. “Wait. I think you owe me an explanation,” I said, remembering the last time he’d said that. He looked over his shoulder at me. “About what? I can explain the world to you, if you’d like.” I shook my head. “You asked me about the time limit on the healing sanity spell a while ago, but you never answered why.” He sighed. “If you must know, my mother lost her sanity years ago. I think. But I was wondering if there was any way to get it back.” “Oh. I’m sorry.” “There’s nothing to apologize for. It wasn’t your fault. You don’t even know her.” “I know. Anyway, now you can leave if you want.” He nodded. “See you around.” I waved slightly, then jogged away to join my friends as he melted into the shadows.
