After we finished our bags of candy, Raza and I raced each other back down the path toward home. He won by a long shot. That kid was a speed demon. Raza’s room was right next to mine. Dinner was in a half hour, so he and I retreated to our rooms to do things. I’m pretty sure Raza was playing with Loki, or he could have been carving something. You never know with him. I closed the door to my room, leaving it open a crack. I unpacked the little bit of items I had in my backpack, then grabbed a piece of paper and a pen. I sat down at my desk and began writing a letter. It was to Naomi. She’d asked me to describe my village for her, and in return she’d describe hers. A few paragraphs in, Raza knocked on my door. “Come in,” I called, still writing. Raza opened the door and walked over to my desk. “What are you writing?” “A letter.” “To…” He read the name on the paper. “Naomi. Is she the girl you told me about?” I laughed slightly. “I told you about four different girls.” “Is she your girlfriend?” Raza asked. I shrugged. “Yes or no?” Raza persisted. “I don’t know. We haven’t made it, like, official, but…” “But you like her?” “Yes,” I said, drawing out the word as much as possible. “Ask her.” “What?” He pointed to the paper. “Ask her. In your letter.” I sighed. I quickly finished, adding a small note at the bottom. -Wolf P.S. Raza wants to know if you’re my girlfriend. Annoying little brother. Raza read it and frowned. “Hey, I’m not annoying.” I snorted. “Sure, you’re not annoying.” “Are you going to send it?” He asked, pulling out his little wooden squirrel. “Yeah, what did you think I was going to do, eat it?” Raza laughed a little. “No. I’ve just never seen someone send a letter.” I looked at him skeptically. “What about the letters you wrote to me?” “Mom and Dad sent those for me. I never saw them do it. I don’t know the spell.” After a pause, he asked shyly, “Could you teach me?” I nodded. “Yeah. Watch and learn.” I muttered the incantation, even though I could do it in my head at this point. The letter floated up, enchanted. “Naomi Peterson. Petersville,” I said, enunciating each syllable. The letter flew out the window. Raza’s jaw was on the floor. “Woah. That’s cool.” I laughed. “Yeah, it’s pretty amazing.” “Mom’s home. Dinner!” Dad called from downstairs. “Coming!” Raza and I yelled back. I looked at my little brother. “Race you.” He smirked. “Oh, you’re on.” We raced out of the room and down the stairs. I took them two at a time, while Raza showed off his amazing footwork by touching each stair on the very edge. I got to the floor just before him. We had dinner, Dad’s pasta casserole. For dessert, we had a German Chocolate Cake. Dad was an amazing cook. After dinner, we stayed up a bit more. Raza, Loki, and I went outside to the yard to watch the stars come up. I looked uneasily at the almost full moon. I knew I had a Wolf Potion ready, but ever since the monster made Shadow and I transform, I hated the full moon even more. Eventually, Mom called us in for bed. Naomi hadn’t replied to my letter yet, which was unsurprising. Petersville was pretty far away. The moon rose higher in the sky as I closed the curtains. I shut the door all the way and laid down to sleep.
