And that wasn’t the worst part. The second the light vanished, well, what followed was painful, to say the least. It always was, and it hadn’t happened to me in months. I’d always had the potion ready. I tried to remember what Professor Ryan had taught us, but with the overall panic and chaos of the situation, it was no use. By the time the pain and shadows cleared, Shadow and I were wolves. Surprisingly, Ren was the one who’d held on and remembered how to stop the transformation. He was backed against a tree in shock, human, and breathing heavily. Harlow, Brazen, Naomi, and Calli were on their feet. I could tell Naomi was trying to get her mind to connect with mine, but having transformed, it felt as if I were watching what was happening through a screen. The monster was still smiling. “Two down, five to go.” Shadow and I had the sense to back away. I, for one, knew we’d be no use to them in our current state. We backed into the underbrush and watched from afar. Harlow resummoned the shadows for a brief second, and when they disappeared, Brazen and Naomi were gone. I remembered what he’d told us at dinner the other day, that Shifters could turn others into things too. The monster snarled. “Where did your Shifter go? And where did he take your Memoria?” The two people in question appeared silently behind us, Naomi human, Brazen a wolf. I backed away as Naomi approached, terrified I might lose the bit of control I held and bite her. She slowly approached further, fearless despite the danger. “Don’t worry, Wolf. I won’t let you hurt any of us. Just remember what Professor Ryan taught you - you can still switch back,” Naomi said softly. I made myself listen to her words and not my fear. She was right, I could do this. I closed my eyes, focusing, and when I opened them after a few seconds of pain, I was human again. Naomi smiled. “I knew you could do it,” she whispered. I looked up, breathing heavily, and met her eyes, sending a message of thanks through that gesture. Meanwhile, Brazen had coaxed Shadow out of her own unplanned transformation. The monster was still raging over in the clearing, where Ren, Calli, and Harlow were still there. Brazen nodded subtly at Harlow, who smirked and shut out the lights again. Brazen turned himself and Naomi into an animal, leaving Shadow and I to sneak out of the underbrush. Once we were all in place, Harlow lifted the shadows and daylight returned. The monster snarled. “Of course. The heroes of Welsburry are no match for any villain set in their path… but what if the element of surprise isn’t on their side?” It didn’t have a chance to do anything, though, since Naomi had snuck up behind it. She slipped a dagger where its heart should have been, and the monster disintegrated. It remained just a small shadow. If the monster had been human formed right now, the few seconds after that would have been spent glaring at all of us. It finally accepted defeat and blew away in the wind. A few moments of silence later, Naomi sheathed her dagger. “Alright, where were we?” “My turn,” Ren muttered, still against the tree. Naomi nodded. “You don’t have to share if you don’t want to.” “Good,” he said, sitting down on the ground. Harlow retrieved the bottle, which had rolled under a bush amidst the chaos, and the rest of us sat down in the circle. After a few more rounds, the five of us went back to the school, leaving Shadow and Ren to themselves. Dinner happened without incident; afterwards, we went to our dorms. Naomi stopped me before I could go into my room. “You okay?” she asked. I shrugged. “Yeah, kinda.” “That took courage, turning back.” I nodded in the pause she took. “But you wouldn’t have caused any of us harm.” “What?” “Remember what Professor Janet said? ‘A werewolf occurs when another werewolf bites a human during a full moon.’ That wasn’t a full moon. That was a different transformation. It might have left a scar, but it wouldn’t have changed any of us.” I was silent for a minute, realizing that once again, Naomi was right. I smiled slightly. “Thanks.” She smiled back. “You’re welcome, Wolf.” The two of us went inside our rooms, and I slept peacefully for the first time in a while.
