The rest of the school week went smoothly. That weekend, the five of us were in Naomi’s room, debating what to do that Saturday. “Wait- I have an idea.” All eyes turned to Harlow. “Let’s play Circle of Secrets… with Ren and Shadow.” The rest of us had no better idea than that, so the five of us went down the pathway to Ren and Shadow’s house. Shadow and Ren were arguing about something outside. Shadow noticed me first. I had gone to get them, while the twins, Cali, and Naomi went to the Wolf fruit grove to set up. “Hi, Wolf. What’s up?” I smiled. “Want to play a game with us?” “What game?” Shadow asked. “Circle of Secrets.” Renshook his head frantically, but Shadow liked the idea. A full two minutes of us trying to persuade him later, he relented. The three of us went to the Wolf fruit grove. “Sit in a circle, everyone,” Naomi instructed. We formed a circle - or at least a lop-sided oval - and Naomi spun the bottle. It landed on Shadow. “Alright, um… Wolf and I lived in the same place before we came here.” I’d forgotten that my friends didn’t know that. “How long?” Naomi asked. “Until we were six,” Shadow said. She spun the bottle again. It landed on her. We decided that she wouldn’t have to share again, so she spun and it landed on her father. He lifted his gaze from the floor. “Do I have to?” he asked quietly. “I think we can arrange that,” a voice called from the shadows. Ren, Harlow, and I were on our feet in the span of a second. “I get the feeling we haven’t been personally acquainted, so… let me introduce myself.” A figure stepped from the shadows. “Didn’t I kill you already?” Harlow asked, looking in the face of Cozbi. The person who had Cozbi’s face nodded. “Yes, you did. I just find his form easier. Unless you’d prefer this.” It turned into Ren. The real Ren flinched. The impostor smiled. “Or maybe this will help you get who I am.” It let go of its human form and melted into a shadowy shroud. “Since when could you talk?” Ren asked quietly. He seemed to be the only one who actually knew what was going on. I had a theory, and this thing was proving it accurate by the second. “I always had a voice,” the shadowy shroud said, turning back into Cozbi. “Which you should know, Ren, seeing as how I inhabited you for three decades. I see you’re the only one who knows who I am, though your friend Acwulf is close.” “Well, do you mind enlightening the rest of us?” Harlow asked. “Harlow, you disappoint me. I honestly had higher expectations of you, as you were the one to kill Cozbi. No small feat, by the way.” Harlow’s face paled, understanding dawning on her face. “You’re the monster.” The monster smiled, though there was no humor in those dark and soulless eyes. “Correct. Now that we’re all acquainted, I believe we can move onto business. And I think I have three of you ready for a change in three… two… one…” The light vanished, leaving only inky black darkness. This wasn’t like nighttime or the shadow part of the woods, where I could see just fine. This was like if Harlow - or any Shade - wrapped your head in shadows.
