*:・゚✧*:・゚✧ Red Wolves are threatened with extinction. They have been hunted down to as few as 17 Red wolves in the past. ✎ Why Were They Hunted? *:・゚✧*:・゚✧ Red wolves were hunted for their pretty pelts among many other things. Farmers believed they hunted and killed their live stock, this was not true, or it wasn't as extreme as they thought it was. Some people even thought they hunted humans which is NOT true. They only hunted rabbits, birds and small deer. This caused many to view them as pests and people hunted them. They hunted them so much they almost went extinct. ✎ How Many Are There Currently? *:・゚✧*:・゚✧ Currently there are an estimated 35 or fewer Red wolves in the United States. Many breeding programs have tried to repopulate the species. They are highly protected and if hunted you could be fined or even sent to jail. Red wolves only mate once a year, meaning that trying to repopulate them has been slow. ✎ Why Do We Need Red Wolves? *:・゚✧*:・゚✧ Red wolves are key to keeping chicken, deer, and rabbit population down. Without them around these animals may become to many and then we will have more problems to worry about. Restoring red wolves also enhances the Earth's biodiversity, which is always a good thing. They are also part of Earths food web, providing food and nutrients for other larger predators. Red wolf carcasses decompose and help enrich the soil. ✎ How Can You Help? *:・゚✧*:・゚✧ Spread awareness about Red wolves. Tell people what has happened to them, and encourage them to do some research. Many places take donations to help the Red wolves too. I hope this helped you learn about Red wolves and understand them better <3
