Our first few classes passed as normal. In Healing, though, we took a slightly different turn than usual. Professor Helen announced that we were moving on from physical injuries. Now, we’d be learning to heal mental ones. Our first spell was one used to heal insanity. If someone lost their mind, we could use this spell within twenty four hours to heal them. Beyond that, though… they were lost. We were definitely going to test this one on partners. Professor Helen had us perform the spells on animals instead. Don’t worry, Professor Janet made sure they were safe and happy. After that class, the spell and new topic were all anyone was talking about, including our group. “Do you think mental injuries will include disabilities, too?” Calli asked us at lunch. Naomi shrugged. “My guess is no, but who knows, maybe they will. Would they heal any, like, trauma too, or just basic insanity?” “What about emotional scars?” Harlow asked quietly. Pleasant topic, as you can probably tell. The rest of our classes went smoothly. After school, I went down to the woods to talk with Shadow. She asked about the classes, I asked about her mom. After our explanations, I started back up to the school. Along the way, I ran into Ren. He stepped out of the shadows, seemingly appearing out of thin air next to me. I jumped. “Jeez- hi there.” The ghost of a smile appeared on his face. “Hello yourself. What does your Professor mean by mental injuries?” I laughed slightly. “I see you were listening. We don’t know the extent of it yet, but we learned how to heal basic insanity.” He nodded. “What’s the limit?” “Twenty four. After that, they’re lost to us. She might teach us more difficult spells later- are you listening?” I paused, watching him. He’d zoned out around my second sentence. He blinked, drawing himself back to the present. “S-sorry. What were you saying?” “I was saying we might learn more difficult spells in the future. Why, who do you know?” “I should go,” he said abruptly, turning to leave. He was avoiding my question and we both knew it. “See you around.” Before I could call after him, he’d melted into the trees again. I sighed, and trudged back up to the school. Who did he know, and why was he avoiding answering? After dinner, we went into our separate dorms, falling asleep. I stayed up for an hour or two, mind working overtime trying to figure out Ren’s secrets.
