“Did you see it yesterday too?” “Good morning to you as well,” I muttered sarcastically, running a hand through my uncombed hair. Brazen smirked, one hand on the knob of the door he’d just barged through, the other in his pocket. “Well, did you?” “If you mean the thing over there,” I said, gesturing to the edge of the woods, “Then yes. I did.” “It’s Saturday, we don’t have school. Wanna go see what it was?” “Thank you, Captain Obvious,” I said, intentionally avoiding the actual question, solely to mess with him. He glared at me, desperately trying to keep the smirk off of his face. I laughed, giving in. “You have to know me well enough by now. Of course I want to.” He grinned. “Harlow’s still asleep. Let’s go.” “I’ll leave a note. Don’t want them to worry,” I said, grabbing a pen and paper. He nodded. “Meet you at the door in 5.” He ran off and I quickly scrawled the letter. I finished getting ready for the day and ran off to the breakfast hall. I grabbed us each a bagel and met Brazen at the door, just in time. He took the bagel and, eating, we walked down to the scene of the mystery. As we rounded a tree, we saw the cause of the strange thing. A person was standing with their back to us, and was focusing very intently on a small spike of ice. “What are you doing?” Brazen asked. The person jumped, startled, and the ice spike grew to five times its size. I wanted to smack Brazen, but that was a normal thing. “Uh, n-nothing,” they said, eyes downcast. They spoke with a slightly British accent, but it sounded like they’d been raised in America, so their accent had diminished. “You might want to fix that,” Brazen said, gesturing to the ice spike. “Brazen, shut up,” I hissed. The person shook their head. “No, it’s fine. You just startled me, that’s all.” They turned back around and, with a bit of focus, the ice spike shrunk a little. “Need help?” I asked quietly. They looked over their shoulder at me skeptically. “You have ice powers, too?” I shook my head. “No. But if you relax, that might help.” “If you don’t have ice powers, then how do you know what would help?” Their tone wasn’t angry, but the ice spike slowly increased its size. I smiled slightly. “A theory. Try it.” They sighed and rolled their eyes, but turned around and took a few deep breaths. The ice spike slowly began to shrink, until it was the size it had been when we’d first come around. “H-how did you-” They asked, lost for words as they turned to me. “A friend. She can control shadows, which is an element. If she’s anxious or annoyed, her powers act up. I figured that could apply to your ice powers, too.” They nodded. “Alright, let’s do proper introductions now. I’m Dusk, and I use they/them pronouns before you misgender me. Who’re you?” “Acwulf. But I go by Wolf,” I said. “Brazen,” Brazen answered, watching the ice spike behind Dusk nervously. Dusk nodded. “How did you find this?” Brazen nodded towards the school. “We go there. We saw… something last night, I guess it was one of your ice spikes, so we came to investigate today.” Dusk nodded again, realization dawning in their eyes. “Ohhhh, I'd forgotten about that.” “Anyways, that’s how we got here. Where do you live?” Brazen finished. Dusk looked out to the horizon for a second and then back down to us. “In the woods. I don’t have a specific home.” Brazen and I nodded in unison. The ice spike behind Dusk started quivering, growing a little bit bigger and then a little bit smaller. Even if Brazen couldn’t, I could tell this was nearing a subject that Dusk didn’t want to talk about, so I changed the subject. “There’s a controlling powers after school activity at our school. I don’t know if they’d let you join, but if you could they could help you control your ice,” I suggested, glancing at the spike behind them. Dusk nodded. “How would I join, though? I don’t go there, and I don’t think your school is free.” I shrugged. “We could ask a professor, then come back down here and let you know.” They nodded again. “That works. Thanks.” Brazen nodded, checking his watch. “We should get back, Wolf. The others are probably wondering where we are.” I nodded. “We’ll ask, Dusk. See you around?” They nodded as they turned away from us. “Yep. See you.” I couldn’t tell if their tone was just reluctant or ominous. Brazen and I ran back to the school. We found the girls in the twins’s room. Harlow looked up. “If you hadn’t left the letter, we would be having quite a different conversation right now,” she said, closing the book she was using. Brazen smiled sheepishly. “We were just investigating something.” “Yeah, I gathered that from the note. Where was yours, by the way? We only saw Wolf’s.” Her brother looked at the floor. “I didn’t have a chance to write one.” Harlow sighed and rolled her eyes. “What do you guys want to do, now that you’re back?” Naomi asked, being the easily forgiving one. (Cont. Story) I shrugged. “Don’t care.” I sat down on the floor. Calli was on Harlow’s bed, Naomi was on Brazen’s, and Harlow was at her desk. Brazen walked over to his desk. “Anyone care about what we were doing?” Harlow, Calli, and Naomi nodded in unison. Brazen took out a pencil and paper, and began to explain about our meeting with Dusk, doodling all the while. As he talked, I ran over to my dorm to grab a book, and busied myself reading while the others listened, and then occupied themselves in some other way. The day flew by relatively quickly. We hung out in the twins’s room until lunch, then practiced without powers in the afternoon. It was the first time I’d turned into a wolf, tame or untamed, in front of my friends. After dinner, when we went back to our dorms, I had a letter on my desk. Wolf, Sorry if I came across as rude or unwelcoming during our conversation earlier, I’m not good with people. Since I could tell your friend was curious, here’s why I’m in the woods. My parents abandoned me years ago, when I was six. I settled in these woods, and have been living here ever since. The reason you probably haven’t noticed me before is that I had a job at the village over at the other end of the woods, and I spent most of my time there. The person who hired me died a few months ago, though, so now I’m here. If I ever pose as a threat to your school, let me know. I’m used to getting kicked out by now. -Dusk As I read their letter, I grew worried for them. If their powers were getting stronger, so much so that they were worried about being a threat to the school, what could that mean for them? I didn’t have the time to reply to Dusk right now, though, so I went to sleep, planning to reply in the morning. Notes/Credits: So, I am writing a story. It's called The Wolf Boy, and it's about a werewolf. This is Chapter 43. New chapters will come out whenever I add something new. You guys are all up to date!
