And it could inhabit another host,” I said from memory, which wasn’t hard, since I just quoted what had been on my mind since that class. “I’ll tell him.” After a pause, she continued. “Why do you hate being a werewolf, Wolf?” I shrugged. “I mean, that’s what’s been drilled into my head, from all the bullies and textbooks and whatnot. ‘Werewolves are bad, werewolves are monsters.’ Professor Janet completely ignored the section about werewolves in our book for the lesson, but I know what it says. It says that werewolves are monsters and are dangerous and if you meet one, you should…” I trailed off. “I hate being a werewolf because it seems that as long as I am one, no one will ever think of me as anything other than a monster. Werewolves are literally listed under the ‘Monster’ category of the Species: Unique and Common book for Survival Class. How am I supposed to believe that werewolves aren’t bad if that’s all that society is telling us?” My voice had raised from a quiet speaking tone to a shout and I hadn’t even realized. After a moment of silence, Shadow spoke again. “Society used to tell everyone that the world was flat. But eventually, someone questioned that, and now society tells everyone that the world is round. So even if society is telling you that werewolves are bad, why don’t you question that? If you question it and convince enough people, sooner or later society will tell everyone that werewolves aren’t bad.” “You make it sound easier said than done.” She shrugged. “It just takes courage, Wolf. That’s all it takes. Bravery and your voice.” I nodded. I was buying little to none of it, but I pretend that I understood. “I should probably get back. See you.” Shadow nodded. “Bye.” As we went our separate ways, I thought of what all my friends had told me. /What’s there not to like about you? You’re still you, Acwulf. We just know more about you. Werewolves aren’t bad, Wolf. Someday you’ll see that. If you question it and convince enough people, sooner or later society will tell everyone that werewolves aren’t bad./ It was all harder than they thought. I couldn’t just remove all that society had told me over the years and start over. As I walked up the steps to have dinner, I kept thinking about what Shadow had said. Why did it seem like my friends knew me better than I knew myself?
