The next day, we went through classes like normal. We continued lessons from the previous day, or started new ones. In Survival Class, though, we’d switched to a new unit: Animals and Monsters. I knew from the title of the unit that this would not go well. Naturally, our first lesson was on werewolves. Instead of telling us to open the book, though, Professor Janet told us to look up front. “I personally think the book does a poor job of explaining what a werewolf is. I know that this is a sensitive topic for some of you,” she explained, her eyes lingering on a few of us in the class, including me. “So I thought that I would explain werewolves today, and you can read the chapter on them in your book later.” She turned her back to us and faced the board. We were in a classroom that almost resembled a greenhouse. It was on the opposite side of the school compared to the woods. The walls had floor to ceiling windows, and a door was on the far end of the classroom. This was Professor Janet’s workspace. “A werewolf occurs when another werewolf bites a human during a full moon,” Professor Janet began. Several hands shot up. “I will take questions after I am finished.” The hands went down. “It is specifically on the full moon that the biting would have an effect because that’s when a transformation happens, willingly or not. Of course, there are ways to prevent this, such as the Wolf Potion and the tricks that Professor Ryan is teaching you in the Powers after school program. “Every one of you has almost definitely heard a werewolf being referred to as a ‘monster’. However, that’s not true for all werewolves. Yes, I said all. Put your hands down. Some werewolves, when bitten, unleash a… dangerous side of them. This has many varying effects, such as split personalities, anger issues, uncalled for transformations, more sensitive transformations, and many other clues. These monsters are very rare, though, and only a handful have been reported over the years. “I am now finished. Are there any questions?” Professor Janet asked, her eyes drifting over the crowd. A few hands shot up. “Elyse?” Professor Janet asked. “If a werewolf is turned from human to wolf when bitten by another werewolf, how did the first werewolf come about?” Elyse asked. “Very good question, Elyse. None of us know exactly, but we suspect that the first werewolf was created when a wolf bit a human and the bite went terribly wrong. Thank you for asking. Sammy?” “It is true that werewolves can transform at will if they learn how?” Sammy asked. “Yes. Professor Ryan will teach you werewolves in due time. Naomi?” She glanced out the window in the direction of the woods and then back at Professor Janet. “Is a monster curable? Like, if someone has a monster, could you remove it for good?” Professor Janet was quiet for a moment. “Very good question, Naomi. I’m not certain if it has ever been done, but I do know that once a monster is there, part of it will always remain in the werewolf. If you were to successfully banish it, the monster would basically leak out and stay in the air. It could possibly inhabit another host, but that’s highly unlikely.” And on that note, the class was over. The five of us left Professor Janet’s class and headed to our dorms. “Why did you ask that, Naomi?” Brazen asked. She shrugged. “I mean, Wolf and Shadow banishing Ren’s monster for good sounds too good to be true, so I was worried, I guess.” Brazen nodded. I was partially paying attention to this, but mainly I was wrapped up in my own thoughts. Professor Janet’s words echoed in my head, /This has many varying effects, such as… uncalled for transformations… It could possibly inhabit another host, but that’s highly unlikely./ After we dropped off our stuff, Naomi and Calli were studying in her room, and the twins were off doing something for Professor Glinda. I had free time, having finished my studies, so I went down to the woods. As I was heading to our Wolf Fruit tree grove, I quite literally ran into Shadow. We both almost fell over. “Oops- sorry,” I said, trying to hide my laughter. She smirked. “It’s fine. Where are the others?” “Just me down here today. They’re studying.” We both walked down the path and toward the lake. “How hard is the schoolwork up there?” Shadow asked. I shrugged. “Easy enough if you pay attention.” She nodded. “What did you learn about today?” I shrugged again. “Same thing as usual.” “Then why were you out in the greenhouse thingy? Nobody’s usually in there. No, I wasn’t spying, but I just happened to be walking by,” she added for clarification. “We were studying werewolves,” I said after a pause. She nodded. “What did you learn?” “How they were made and the side effects. Like the monsters.” She nodded again. “Learn anything useful? Like, for Ren?” (Continued in Pt 2)
