Instructions

The next day was a Saturday. Once I got up, I stuck my head out the window to look outside. Naomi’s light was on, but the twins’s and Calli’s windows were still dark. I stuck my head back inside, then looked out again. I spotted Shadow’s grandmother’s house amidst the trees, and saw a figure outside of it. I assumed it was Ren by the way he held himself. I stuck my head back inside and debated writing a letter. I decided what I wanted to do would be better done in person. By now, it was 7:45, so I got dressed and went into the hall. No one else was outside yet. A few more minutes of waiting later, Calli’s door opened. “Morning, Wolf,” she said brightly. I smiled. “Hi.” “What did Professor Ryan teach you?” “We only covered some of how to stop the transformation.” “But doesn’t the Wolf Potion do that? What’s the point if you already have a cure?” I thought for a minute. She’d made a good point. “Well, some people don’t have the time, effort, or ingredients for the potion. If they can learn to stop the transformation at will, then that could lower the amount of werewolves.” Calli smiled. “Werewolves aren’t bad, Wolf. Someday you’ll see that.” I had no reply to that. That’s what stereotypes had been drilled into my head, from then bullies at my village to the amount of werewolves in hiding to Ren and Cozbi’s monster. Naomi and the twins came out a few minutes later. The five of us went down to breakfast. “What should we do today?” Harlow asked, grabbing a bagel and spreading cream cheese on it. Brazen shrugged, grabbing a spoon for his cereal. “Unless one of us wants to, I think we can do something else besides studying,” Naomi suggested, pouring maple syrup on her pancakes. I nodded. “That’s true. Do we want to go down to the woods or do something up here?” Calli put a forkful of eggs in her mouth. “I guess we could continue our game of Circle of Secrets.” Brazen nodded. “Sounds good to me.” The rest of us agreed, so Harlow grabbed a bottle and we all joined together in Calli’s room. I spun the bottle, and it landed on Calli. She pondered for a moment. “Uh, my great-grandparents were pirates.” Brazen gasped. “Cool!” She smiled at him and spun the bottle. It landed on Naomi. She thought and suddenly landed on something. “I can see dead people’s memories.” “/What?/“ I asked, incredulously. “I can see dead people’s memories,” Naomi calmly repeated. “How do you know?” Harlow asked. “I accidentally read Cozbi’s mind after he shot at Shadow,” she explained, carefully avoiding saying “after he was killed”. Harlow nodded. “What did you see?” “Cozbi’s bit around 70 people.” Brazen’s brow furrowed. “That many?” “You’d be surprised how hard it is not to bite someone when it’s a full moon,” I said quietly, not caring who heard. Naomi chose that moment to change the subject, spinning the bottle. We played that for most of the morning. After lunch, we went down to the woods and raced through the trees. I won once, Brazen another time, and Calli the other. After that, we went back inside for dinner, and then went into our individual dorms. As I tried to go to sleep, Calli’s words kept lingering in my head. /Werewolves aren’t bad, Wolf. Someday you’ll see that./ But how could I learn to see when I’d grown up blind?
