During Breakfast the next morning, Professor Brooks made an announcement. “If you would like to join a special after-school club, sign-up sheets are on the message board outside. Sign-ups are open until next week. Our first meeting will be today after your last class. It will run from 2 until dinner time.” The dishes disappeared as Brazen asked, “What do you think the club is?” Naomi shrugged. “Maybe it’s a club for special skills,” Harlow said, watching the mob of students rush towards the doorway, the oak tables waiting to be cleaned by the staff. The five of us, me, Naomi, Calli, and the twins, followed the mass of people. Finally, the students dispersed enough so that we could read the club description. The five of us ran up to it, but Naomi got to it first. “Welcome to the Power Control Club… this club is for students who have special powers but can’t/need help controlling them… powers include telepathy, shapeshifting, element manipulation, werewolves and other mutations, healing with a touch, and many more!” Naomi read aloud as the rest of us skimmed the article. “We could join!” I nodded excitedly. I wondered what they offered as far as controlling /my/ kind of power… would I be able to stop the transformation entirely, or would it strengthen the control I had when I transformed? Could this skill be taught easily to another werewolf or would it have to be taught by a professional? Calli nodded. “The club’s this afternoon. If we’re gonna join, might as well be now,” Brazen said, grabbing the dangling pen and signing his name. Harlow signed it next, then Calli, then Naomi, and finally, me. After a relatively busy day of school, with everyone talking about the new club, the five of us and many other students of all ages went down to the dining hall. When we arrived, a surprise awaited us inside. The wooden tables and benches had been moved away, and what was left was a large open space. Professor Glinda was already teaching a group of kids what looked like healing, as it was already 2:45. As we looked around, we saw Professor Raymond teaching shapeshifting, Professor Brooks teaching shadow manipulation, Professor Malone telepathy, and all the way in the back, Professor Ryan working with a group of werewolves. We each went to our separate groups. Professor Ryan looked up as me and another student walked over. “Ah, Acwulf and Ranya. Welcome, and you can start with Opal and Artemis over there,” he said, gesturing to two students, a boy and a girl. That club meeting was fun. Professor Ryan explained what we would be learning, how to control when we turned into a wolf, how to stop things like Ren’s monster from happening, and how to stop the transformation at the full moon. That day, though, we only learned some of how to stop the transformation. It would take a while, Professor Ryan told us, but we could master it. At dinner, my friends and I discussed what we’d learned. “I had no idea my mom could heal,” Calli told us between bites of her grilled cheese. “Same! I never knew Professor Ryan was a werewolf,” I agreed. I’d finished my sandwich a few minutes ago and had started on my chips. “Did you guys know I could turn into /objects/ too?” Brazen grinned. “I could turn into a flying orange and I never knew.” Harlow stifled a laugh. Naomi smiled. “Professor Malone was really good. She taught the entire lesson through telepathic conversation.” Harlow smiled. “That sounds cool. Professor Brooks taught us how to control the level of darkness, which I could already do, and he told us we could work with werewolves to contradict their wolfishness.” She finished her slice of pizza. “And we can help moderate people who can control light. They can moderate us, too.” After we all finished, we each went to our dorms. Naomi told us good night telepathically, and Brazen proved that yes, he could turn into a flying orange. Long after most people had gone to bed, I was still up, repeating what Professor Ryan had taught us that day. I was more than ready to beat this curse.
