Infection spreads (red), some wear masks (black), some recover and become immune (grey), a few die (skulls). Healthy is green, because they are Martians. Before clicking flag again, you can adjust the % wearning masks. Try turbo mode: hold shift while clicking flag. These pointy-eared aliens behave in a simple-minded fashion, moving around and not avoiding illness except by wearing masks.
Disease spreads from contact of green with red. With black masks covering faces (half black), less red and green are exposed, lowering chance of disease. The black covering half of the face reduces the chance of green touching red by about 50%. Note that the Martians' time is accelerated. With this rapid mixing and contact, even a 1% infectivity results in rapid disease spread. Here I depict Martians to emphasize the over-simplified cartoonish quality of this model, which doesn't factor in the complexities of humans and their world. The 80% non-elderly (which are elderly is not visible, but in the code) will all recover eventually, and a proportion of the elderly Martians will die if infected. (I actually published a model of mask wearing and disease spread in the Journal of Theoretical Biology a couple years ago).
