I tried to do shading, but it didn't work. Backstory in a nutshell: Osiss went to war and a wolf saved his life, but died. The wolf's soul imbued itself in his lantern, and became like a black ghost wolf thingy. They became friends. The ghost enlarged his body's skull and Osiss put it on to mask his shame for letting his friend die.
