If you are/were a supporter of Toei Animation, then this project is very important. Also, just like the project I made about COPPA in 2019, I may be missing some important info, so if I am, let me know in the comments. So I think we can all agree that the YouTube Copyright System is flawed. But yesterday, a YouTuber by the username Totally Not Mark has been hit by copyright claims by Toei Animation. And it's not just on 1 or 2 videos, NO, it's over 150 VIDEOS. I'm not kidding. Over 150 have been claimed and taken down. This is an unbelievable example of abuse of power. Totally Not Mark isn't even trying to steal from Toei at all. According to Mark, he says that those 150+ videos taken down equate to about 3 years of work. All of that just to get claimed and demonetized. Toei basically destroyed a YouTuber's career for no reason and shows no respect to their supporters. Let me compare this to something. Imagine you spent about 3 years building a massive world in Minecraft, just for those 3 years to be wasted after your world gets deleted. How would you feel? That's exactly how Mark feels right now. Mark could reach out to YouTube, but YouTube right now is so flawed that they don't even care about creators that have their videos unfairly claimed by a major company. However, he is able to get his videos back through a slow process where he submits a counter notification to Toei, for which they have 15 days to respond (according to Mark, Toei never responds), and after that, if they don't respond, his video gets reinstated and is available again. However, according to Mark, he can't do this to multiple videos at once. Like I said, it's a slow process, and according to Mark, to get all 150+ of his videos back, he needs to submit counter notifications for over 37 years. Just the fact that it would take over 37 years to get all of his videos back could damage his career on YouTube. Out of all the 150+ videos Toei claimed and blocked, 9 of them were drawing videos, which took a lot of work to make, and didn't even use footage from Toei. If you use Scratch, you would probably see some art projects. Now imagine if a major company took down all of those art projects, basically destroying a creator's hard work. Even worse, Toei didn't even bother to check the video to see if it actually violated the fair use laws. They just abuse the copyright system by claiming his videos in a short time, some of his videos being taken down seconds apart from each other. And you know what's even worse? Toei actually asked Mark to help promote some concerts a while ago, so basically they were using Mark just for the money. They asked him to promote Toei, and then backstab him. In conclusion, Toei has basically abused YouTube creators who make videos about them and falsely claim their videos. It's one thing to take down videos uploading anime openings before the anime comes out (*cough* Tropical Rouge...) but it's another thing to take down over 150+ of someone's hard work for no reason at all. If you support, spread the word. We cannot let Toei silence us like this.
