The next day, after school, Harlow had gone down to the woods, while Brazen and Calli were in the courtyard. Naomi and I went down to our row of dorms, and she ran into hers quickly. She called me a second later. I opened her door and saw her by her desk with a note in her hand. “What is it?” I asked, walking over. “From Danielle. Carlos is awake!” Naomi answered, a grin on her face. I smiled. “Do you want me to come or do you want to go alone?” She set down the letter. “You can come.” I followed her outside of the school, and she sprinted to the Treehouse Village, me at her heels. By the time I caught up with her, she had already opened the door. Danielle was talking to her as I climbed the ladder. “About 20 minutes or so,” Danielle was saying when I got up there. Naomi nodded. She turned around. “I’ll go in first, then you can come?” I nodded. “He’s your brother.” She smiled and followed Danielle inside. I leaned against the railing, looking down at the clearing. I recognized Diego and his sister, Jackie, over nearby a Wolf Fruit tree, picking ripened fruits and tossing them to Sam and Melody. Seeing the fruits got me thinking: Had Cozbi been bluffing, or had he actually known how to remove the werewolf from someone? I didn’t want that to happen to me, but maybe someone else did. I wasn’t sure. A few minutes later, Naomi poked her head out. “C’mon.” I turned around and followed her inside. The treehouse consisted of a kitchen, a living room, and two bedrooms. Carlos’s room was the first door on the left. When we entered the room, Carlos was sitting at his desk. He was tapping the table with one hand and had the other pressed against his temple, as if he had a headache. He looked up. “Hi.” I waved awkwardly. Naomi smiled and leaned against the wall. After a few moments of awkward silence, Carlos looked up. “So, can either of you explain this?” He snapped, and suddenly his hand was ablaze. My eyes widened. Naomi gasped. “You can control fire?” Carlos nodded. “Apparently.” “Since when?” I asked. “Since I woke up. So around a half hour or so.” I nodded. “Anything else that’s changed?” Naomi asked. Carlos shook his head. “As far as I know, no.” Naomi nodded. They exchanged a few more comments, then she and I left. As we turned to go, Naomi turned around to talk to her brother one last time. “If you need anything, you know where I am.” He nodded, a small smile on his face. “And you know where I am, too.” After that, we left and came back to the school at dinnertime. The twins, Naomi, Calli, and I sat at our usual table, and we all had philly cheesesteak sandwiches. After dinner, we went to our row of dorms. I had a letter on my desk. As it was only 7:45, I sat down to read it. Wolf, Hi. So, you know I can control fire now. I was wondering if you knew anyone who could, kinda , see if anything else has changed? It’s fine if you don’t, I’m just curious. Carlos P.S. I didn’t ask Naomi, because I don’t want her to worry too much. Please don’t tell her. I read the letter, then thought about Shadow’s father. He had had his monster, so he must have some experience with this kind of stuff. It was a hunch, but I could try. I grabbed a pen and paper, and started writing a reply. Carlos, Yes, I know someone who could help. Remember Ren? He had a monster, which is why he was evil. Shadow and I banished the monster, though, so he’s safe now. But because of that, he could know how to help. I can ask him, if you want. I’ll keep this a secret from Naomi, don’t worry. Wolf I sent the letter. A reply came back a few minutes later. Wolf, Okay. You can ask him, since I don’t really fully trust him. Thanks, Carlos I hastily scrawled two different letters, one in response to Carlos, the other to Ren. Carlos, I’ll ask him now. Good luck. Wolf Ren, So, I don’t think we’ve ever really talked. But, you know Carlos, the one who Cozbi attacked? He would like help, and you’re the only person I can think of. If you don’t want to, that’s fine. Send me a reply back with your choice, please. Acwulf After I sent the letters, I shut off the light and went to sleep.
